Positive triple screen

Has anyone had this blood test screening? Mine came back today with red flags on the neural tube defects- spina bifida test. I am so scared. I see the perinatologist tomorrow for a superd ultra sound and to discuss an amnio.

Ladies I just can not tell you how horrific this pregnancy has been. From the IVF hyper stimm, to the bleeding to the bedrest and now this. I think God may not have wanted us to have a baby. I just do not have it in me to rear a deformed child. I wouldn't be able to do it.

Has any one been through this test and the following tests?

Please- take a breath, relax.

There is a good reason why women over 35 do not have the triple sceen done. They have tons of false positives which make you crazy. You can search this bb and find many do not use it.

Now- why are you scheduled for a level 2 or 3 u/s. they should be able to see the spine clearly and detect any problems. About 25% of the population has spina bifida occulta where there is a small defect in the spine.

I refused these tests b/c of the false negatives. I think there may be better predictors- so I am hoping that someone will chime in and tell us about them.

Have you had the nuchal fold test?

I've had 2 high risk pg and one that was normal. My twin pg ended tragic. I understand you stress.

Do you have a peri or is this a reg ob? you may want to get some names of high risk obs and peris incase you want some second opinions with some of the further testing .

How many weeks are you?

Annie- I will also tell you that there are many degrees of spina bifida and that some can be correct right after birth. So please, stay calm and start making calls tomorrow as to what your next diagnostic step can be.

Hugs to you sweetie, let us know... I'll be praying.

Hugs to you annie and I echo what BC-GoMom said. I had the NT scan done and I was ok with the numbers that came back. Even though I did do the bloodwork, I was content with the NT scan and chose to wait until the Level II u/s. I was 37 (4 days shy of 38) when I delivered my son. My sister just delivered in Jan at age 37 and her numbers were not very good. She was really considering an amnio but chose to wait and do the Level II and everything looked normal.

I will tell you that my co-worker has a grandson that was born to her daughter when she was 19 yrs old with spina bifida. His was pretty severe and he's had to have alot of surgeries and physiotheraphy but he is finally starting to walk on his own at age 5. He is an absolute adorable and beautiful little boy. He is one of the smartest and brightest little guys and can talk like there is no tomorrow. She always brought him in to work to see us and if you were having a bad day, this little guy could brighten it up with just one of his beautiful smiles and he starts school this September.

Just try to relax (I know easier said than done) and let us know how your u/s goes.

I answered over on the expecting-in-April-IVF board but wanted to wish you well. And also say that for each of my pg (at 39 and now at 41) we had better-than-age results on NT+b/w so we waited until level 2 u/s to decide on amnio. In both cases the level 2 looked 'good' and didn't raise red flags so we did not do amnio.

DD was fine. We'll know in ~6w about my new little one. I will say I am a tad nervous.

While there were no red flags my numbers were still a bit higher/worse than I would have liked this go around... largely because of age.

Many gentle hugs,
-tia

False positive!

Since I had the placenta previa bleed earlier in pregnancy the triple screen came back with an elevated spinabifida result. I repeated 3 weeks later and it came back totally NORMAL! It was 3weeks of hell-waiting and worring. I wish someone would have told me that these bleeds could cause abnormal results on triple screens.

Anyway all is good! Thank you God as always.

I posted my 20 week ultrasound pics on the Aug due date board.

Thank you again ladies for all of your support- I am blessed to have you.
