would you do amnio

I am 36 and here is my diliema

I had the nuchal test at 13/14 weeks. I say this as my OB said I was 13 on the dot and the Peri said based on crown to rump I was 13w 6d, based in when I concieved and I am pretty sure I know when I was 13w 3d.
Initial nuchal came back for DS as 1 in 1800, I was thrilled. I went for the second blood draw at 16 weeks, based in peri's guess and had the AFP well now the results say 1 in 120 for DS. I went in for the U/S and they said that everything looked normal. He got a good look at the heart and saw no problems, brain looked normal, something on the pinky they look for was fine, kidneys looked fine, baby measured well and weight was on track. The Peri's comment was that my odds maybe went to 1 in 200 after u/s as DS is more mental retardation than something physical they can see on a scan.
I know AFP can be wrong often, and that is the factor that threw me off he even said it was the low AFP that was off. I thought u/s was accurate and he made it soome like it wasn't. I feel like I am a nervous wreck now even though the odds are like 1/2% but I would feel worse if I did amnio and then lost the baby and she was healthyl.

Any advice?

Thanks

Kimberly

Dear Kimberly:

I can only speak for my thoughts on how I formed my opinion. I opted to do the 1st Trimester screen, primarily for the NT Scan. Either I could eliminate any concerns in my mind for the next 6 months or prepare myself for a special gift. The results would not change my having the baby.

Having said that the risks for anything invasive, are too great for me. I do not want to induce anything that would post a risk to the baby, especially a miscarriage that I caused.

I found an interesting link on risks:

You might want to check out some of the other posts as well, like "amnio results: all's well!". One of the comments by Tracy made sense: "But if all else is normal, I think the one high result is not likely to be very meaningful. I think a cluster of abnormal results is more likely to be a cause for concern, according to what I've read. But it's hard not to worry."

Wishing you a wonderful pregnancy and a happy, healthy baby.

Lauri
