Antibody screen in blood work for NT scan
Hi Ladies,
My Ob's office just called to say all my blood work was back and an antibody screen came back positive. They seemed to indicate it's not rh and also indicated it was likely caused by blood transfusions I had after surgery in 1999, but they're sending me to a genetic counselor as well as in for the NT scan which I wanted anyway... They don't specialize in genetic counseling so they wouldn't say more than that, but now my nausea has nausea. Anyone else have anything like this? Thanks so much- Tammy

Ok, I got more info and I figured I'd share it in case anyone else should find themselves in a similar situation.
I had a blood transfusion after surgery and was given blood from a donor who was antibody K+. This is not something that poses any kind of threat to me so its not something they'd screen for. Now, I produce antigens to K. If the father (I'm pregnant with donor sperm) is K+ (only 8% of American men are K+ and my sperm bank is finding out) then we have big problems because my blood will attack and try to kill the baby's blood. This is like Rh on crack with tons of risk and seems to mean regular blood transfusions for the baby inutero. If the father is K- like me, everything is fine. Keep your fingers crossed for me ladies!! Also this only occurs in 0.1% of pregnancies so pretty rare... |

The sperm bank already got back to me and is up for testing whatever I need as long as I can confirm if it's K (Kell) or one of the numbered k's. I have an call into the Dr's office to hopefully get that today.
The Dr who does the NT scans likes to do them at the end of the window for whatever the reason so they really don't want to bump that appt up. I have a feeling an amnio is in my future because of the antibody K thing, regardless of what I find out about the donor. They'll want to know for sure rather than leave it to someone else's testing. I, on the other hand, will be greatly relieved if the sperm bank can confirm he's negative. I'm sure my Dr's office thinks I'm a pain... but they'll have to deal. I have a right to the info. |
