How many "advanced maternal agers" had amnio
Don't you just love that term??????
Anyway how many had amnio or CVS? I am 36 and will be 36 at the birth if that helps. Does it hurt? How bad does it hurt? What does it feel like? What did it feel like after? How long till you felt totally fine with no cramping or anything? Sorry for all the questions but I am just getting nervous about my upcomming testing....etc. Thanks in adnavce Kimberly

Kimberly,
Both my amnios were done between ages 35-40. It was not necessarily recommended, despite "advanced maternal age" (makes you feel like a senior, doesn't it?!). I elected to do it, so I wouldn't worry the rest of the pregnancies. It feels the same like if you're getting a shot. A brief pinch and then you're fine. My biggest problem was that I was scared I'd move so I was really stressed until it was over. It took maybe a minute or two (once the needles in/ the preparation can take ten minutes of swabbing, finding the fetus on the screen, etc.). Shorter if they take only enough fluid for the amnio, a tiny bit longer if they take extra for the FISH (quick results within a few days). No discomfort immediately after. Some cramping for a few days afterwards and then it subsided. I was really careful the stay in bed. Good luck! Shef |

Hi! Isn't it amazing that we can even conceive given the fact that we've got one foot in the grave?
I had an amnio at age 35, and it was no big deal (except the look on dh's face as they were doing it!). I'm a little more nervous with this one at age 40 (41 at delivery). We may opt for CVS, but we're still doing some research on it. Apparently, it's hard to find a doc anywhere in Ohio that will do it! I blame medical malpractice insurance companies for that one.... Good luck with your decision - I'm right there with you... Jan

I had one at 37.... it was really a piece of cake. One tiny pinch when introducer went in(plastic type needle), then just a little bandaide, no cramping.... and great piece of mind when I got the call "normal baby girl". I did specifically ask my dr what HIS COMPLICATION rate was and how often/how many he does. That was very reassuring as the complications are usually due to operater error. good luck.

I had a cvs at 10 weeks. Very reassuring to know that all was ok before I was even showing, and at age 44! The test itself was painless (intra-cervical) though I cramped for a couple of days afterwards. I just turned 45 and the baby will be here when I am 45.25. My first! (i'm guessing my last, too!)

I just had a CVS last week. I was terrified, but it did not hurt at all, and I had no spotting or cramping. I guess I was lucky, but I would definitely do it again. My CVS was done vaginally. I've heard the abdominal CVS is more uncomfortable. Good luck!

Oh, by the way, I will be 38 when I deliver, and I hate the term AMA, too!

I'm scheduled for an amnio tomorrow. Even though I'm 44, I was hoping to avoid it, but my 1st trimester screening came back with some possible markers for Down Syndrome (overall risk was 1/67, HcG level was 95th percentile, sonogram found absent nasal bone--scary stuff). Now I'm a bit frantic, so I've decided to go ahead.
