Blood screen positive - any hope? - UPDATED
Hello ladies -
I just got a call from the nurse that my blood screen came back positive for Down's with an awful number of 1:10. I'm 16 weeks pg., will be 37 in a month. I know there is a chance for a false positive, but calculated odds seem so horrible. I'm numb, and can barely breath.. Amnio is scheduled for next tuesday. Did any of you have/had such bad numbers with a healthy outcome?. so terrified...

Yes, we had been given the chances of 1 in 7.
that was after a NT and the accompanying blood work. Baby does not have Down's. He just turned 1! I really am not a fan of those tests, but that being said...please know that they are not conclusive. Try your best to wrap your arms around your belly and tell your baby, Everything is going to be alright. It was the only thing that kept me sane while we waited for results. Hugs and love, J

the blood tests for over 35 women are notorious for being wrong.
Have hope! I refused them just for that reason and had babies at 35, 37 and 39. Even with those numbers you have a 90% chance of having a genetically healthy baby- right?

Sorry for the barge, but I just wanted to give you some more proof of how wrong these tests can be. The blood screen for my oldest came back with no increased risk and guess what? He has down syndrome. Dumb test didn't pick it up at all. I refused the tests with my youngest and I won't do them this time either, going to do Level II u/s instead. I really wouldn't worry too much about those blood screen tests, very very few of them are ever correct. And remember, all it does is access risk, it's not a diagnosis. From what I've read, age alone will increase the odds whether or not the test actually detects anything abnormal. I couldn't agree more with AMF that you just need to relax and tell yourself and your baby that everything is fine.

thanks ladies, I'm trying to stay positive, it's very hard. Have to remind myself to breath. almost a week till amnio, and then waiting for the results... One breath at the time..
AMF - did you have amnio after your "1/7"? So glad your little boy is just fine |

Another quick note, funny thing the new pg magazine that I just picked up today had an article about this very subject and it said that of all blood-screen tests that have an abnormal reading 97% result in a perfectly healthy baby. Hope that gives you some more reasurance, even if it's just a little. Take care!!

Yes and no. We were too early for amnio and I didn't want to wait the additional couple of weeks, to we opted for a CVS.

barge--
just happened upon your post and wanted to log in. yug, i'm so sorry about your test results, but as you can see, there are a lot of women here to reassure you about how wrong those tests can be. i think focusing on that 90% chance that everything is fine is the best piece of advice you can have! i'm with you on this journey. so stressed about my own amnio, set for tomorrow AM. i'm now 16W p/g with twins at age 41, so my odds are 1/35 for downs/trisomy. i've been doing my best to focus on the 97% chance that all is well, but like you, the risk seems so high for some reason. amnio risk is higher for twins, so that has us scared to death, but i think we are going through with it. the process of expecting twins and thinking about what this will mean for us has been extremely difficult, so i think we need to know if the babies are healthy. i'll keep you posted, and yug, please let me know how things are going with you. jen |

I just wanted to say I too got back a positive test and had a 1/35 chance. I had to wait 4 long weeks before my level 2 and I was sick with worry. Now I have a healthy 15 month old girl.
I know it is hard to relax but those test are notorious for bad results. I will not do them ever again. I will just wait for a level 2 u/s cuz now I/m 35 and am in the "old" mom group praying your baby is fine
