Ugh, high risk?

Hi all- I met my ob/gyn for the 1st time yesterday. He told me I am considered high risk b/c I have hypertension (was diagnosed 2 years ago). My primary care doc told me I was not high risk. So, now I've been reading about preeclampsia and am getting very worried. I am on 100mg. of labatelol (sp?). He is having me do a 24 hour urine collection (which is oh so joyful) to check my protein levels. He also gave me all the screening options (CVS, amnio, etc..). If only actually getting pregnant was the hardest part. So, just put this out there to see what others have heard or experienced.

Thanks and hope everyone is doing wonderfully!!

Hi, TTC Congratulations!

I'm 40, now...was 39 when my miracle was born...and I've been diagnosed with hypertension since I was like 21..and the med they put me on while pregnant, and am on still...is Aldomet 500mg/twice a day...if I remember it!
I wasn't considered "high risk" unless they told me my bp shot up and stayed up, causing risk to the baby. Luckily, I kept my bp down, for most of my pregnancy I was thankful. One thing that helped with that is I had gestational diabetes and HAD to watch my diet for the safety of Ryanne. So,
not getting to eat my salty Doritos....helped *LOL*

I was induced on her due date, because of my age and my history of BP....not my GD, though. She was born on her due date and that's GREAT with me. lol

I would say, take ONE DAY at a time!! (easier said than done!) Eat sensibly (but give in to a few NEEDS now n then!) and exercise, even if a small walk/day and take care of you, to help take care of that sweet baby!!!

Do what the Dr says....best you can.

How far along are you?

Take care!
Dee

*barging in*

Hey TTC, I have developed what they call Gestational Hypertension. I have never had problems with my blood pressure before, but at about 16 weeks we started seeing a trend in it going up. BTW...I am 29. So it can happen to anyone at any age.

My OB isn't worried about it yet. Yes, I am now considered high risk because of it and because of the nature we got pregnant (IVF), but we are looking on the bright side. We get extra care because we are high risk. I am going to the doctor more frequently than other pregnant girls so we can monitor what is going on.

I was scared when I read about pre-eclampsia also. But we are taking it one day at a time. The further along I get, the better I feel about it. There is lots that can be done to ensure a successful delivery of a healthy baby when pre-eclampsia occurs.

I agree with Dee, watch what you are eating and get some exercise each day. That is how my doctor and I are treating my Gestational Hypertension. It isn't bad enough for meds, but it is high enough to be concerned about.

Good luck with your pregnancy!

one more happy ending.... thought i'd be high risk because of my age (39 for #1) but in MA, at least in Boston area, that does not qualify.

i thought i'd get GD being PCOS at the start... failed the 1-hour, but passed the 3-hour twice. ate gd-friendly most of pg anyway.

but did manage to pick up high bp in about week 36. misdiagnosed w/pre-eclampsia at 37 weeks, including a false-start induction... induced at 39w+ due to high bp and size of baby (over 9#s by u/s, and born at 9#s 13 ozs), and then diagnosed pre-eclamptic on day of induction (ugh -- maybe they were right the first time?), still induced only to stall out at 8cm about 20 hours in so concluded with a c-section.

worst part of the pre-e was the magnesium they added to my drip. one of my biggest concerns (independent of risk factors) was laboring for multiple days and ending with a c-section anyway. i guess i was lucky that the whole thing was under a day? also didn't want to be induced, but ended up with no real choice. and it was all okay.

also had continued high bp post partum for longer than expected. almost put me back on the magnesium (ugh!), but they didn't need to and with meds bp got under control, and i was eventually weaned off the meds.

So, many bumps along the way, BUT IT ALL WORKED OUT FINE! DD is just over 7 months and the joy of my life.

moral of the story... being labeled high risk does not change your medical condition(s), it just gives it/them a name. if you can get extra monitoring that's not bad. if you do have issues/conditions best to know it and treat them accordingly.

it can all be stressful, but as pp said, take it one day at a time.

most of all, enjoy your pg! it will pass faster than you can imagine.

congrats!
