Alrighty...totally freaking out about stopping Prometrium...
same post as on April due date board...
Alrighty...totally freaking out about stopping Prometrium... OK ladies. Went to OB yesterday and she told me to come back in 2 weeks, at which point we will start to "wean" off of the Prometrium. I'll be just over 12 weeks then. I expressed that I'm extremely worried to do it and am afraid I will miscarry. Mind you, I haven't msicarried from stopping before, it's just a thought that's been popping into my head lately (I'm a nervous Nelly). The doc simply stated, "It's time to get you off of them, and we'll go slowly". THEN she told me that I may expect to see some BLEEDING when I stop -- WHAT! OMG! I"LL DIE! I"LL BE WANTING TO GO TO THE ER EVERYDAY! Here's the question: Has anyone else experienced bleeding when stopping progesterone supplements? I've never heard of this. Of course, during my first pregnancy, I was on prog suppositories, and they cause so much of a "back up" down there (sorry if tmi but they leave a lot of residue in your vaginal area) that even if I did spot, I would have never known it. Help! njmama 10w3d

I was told by the on call nurse that it's questionable how much prometrium is actually useful. My RE put me on it without ever testing my levels. I was told they would pull me off at around 10 weeks. At 8 weeks I felt like I had a bladder or urinary tract infection and it was actually the prometrium irritating my urethra. So they had me stop at 8 weeks. I was really nervous anyway and backed off slowly, one pill less every two days. I was on 3 a day, so it took me about a week. Never bled or anything because of it. By 12 weeks your baby is making enough to support the pregnancy so please don't worry!

I was totally off of progesterone before 8 weeks. They cut my dose in half about a week before I took my last dose at 7w3days--or some day close to that. Three days later they checked levels once more, and told me I was done (with the RE AND progesterone
SO, chances are you will be fine because you will have taken it a lot longer than I had . Do they test your levels? ETA: No spotting (which was my greatest worry/obsession) when I reduced or stopped.

I was probably around 12 weeks when I started weaning from the Prometrium. First, I started taking them orally instead of vaginally (not sure which you're doing now). That was nice, because taken them vaginally is a mess! Then I started cutting back from four times per day, and gradually over time I went down to none. I never experienced bleeding or any symptoms, and I think the whole weaning process was pretty quick. I totally understand why you're worried, but try to relax. If you've made it this far you're probably OK without the Prometrium. If you do bleed, unless it's gushing, just get off of your feet for a while and call the doctor in the morning. Good luck!
