Placental Hemmorrage
Hi ladies -
I need some direction on how to handle this situation. I am 37 and 10w 2d, and for the past week, had been experiencing light spotting. On Sat even turned to bright red and almost as much as a period. I went to the ER and after internal ultra-sound, they discovered a small hemmorrage in the placental tissue. A seperation of sorts. The ER Dr told me I did nothing to cause it, and there was nothing I could do to stop it from happening again. He said I would have a 50/50 shot of loosing the PG. He said to go about my regular activities, but just to take it easy. I spent the next 2 days flat in bed, with no more bleeding or spotting at all. Today I went back to work and soon after began to show color again. I left, came home and went to bed. My question is this. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, did bed rest help resolve the situation? According to the ER, it should have no affect, but it seems to me, it makes all the difference. Any feedback would be appreciated. D.

D.,
I had a friend that had a similar situation. She had several bad bleeding episodes. Unfortunately, the first resulted in a m/c, but the second time she had a full-term, normal pg. Her doctor put her on progesterone very early in the pg., but she still had significant bleeding. Can you get in to see a specialist? ER doctors quite often are unable to properly diagnose these issues - they want to make sure you're not dying and then ship you out ![]() Good luck, Jan

My regular OB is a Fertility Specialist, (not sure exactly what that means) and I called the on call service before I went to the ER. I was told that if I was not bleeding through a pad in 30 minutes, I should just wait until my reg sched visit 7-17, or until the office was open. I went to the ER anyway. It was not my Dr who responded to the on-call page, in fact, not even sure it was a Dr at all. I guess I have been hesitant to call again, as they seem to think it is not any sort of emergency. I have heard a lot of stories from friends who bled during PG and still went full term. I am just not confident all is okay with me. I had zero problems with my first, but was a lot younger then also. I have never seen an RE, not even quite sure what that means completley, and I guess it is a little intimidating for me. I am wondering if I should just stay in bed until my reg visit, and ask my OB to advise me. Thanks for the reply. D. |

I had a major bleeding episode at 16 weeks with my oldest dd. I stood up from the floor and it was a gush. I just "knew " I had lost my pg b/c there was so much blood and went to the ER (after 20 wks I was suppose to go to L&D) They did an us and baby was fine- they told me the sex (girl) and said I had a subchorionic hemorrhage. This happens (check out the high risk pg bb) I was told to take it easy (I stayed on the couch or bed for a week. The area had to heal before the spotting stopped. I delivered at 39 weeks- she's 5.5 years now and beautiful! I had a mother type friend who made me stay off my feet- she swears that it will help prevent m/c. I would have stood on my head to keep my pg- If you stay off your feet for a while and you go on to deliver- then great. If you don't and you do end up m/c- you will always wonder "what if"- you can say you did everything you could if you take it easy and not work. That would/was be "my" action. Would your OB see you maybe at the end of the week to help you calm? Do you have a home doppler that you could use to help you feel better? Keep posting.... let us know how you are doing. OK? HUGS JenC

D,
I had a similar situation with my first pregnancy. I started spotting less than a week after my positive test. It turned from various states of brown to bright red with clots over the course of 14 weeks. I was told by my fertility doc to stay on bedrest until it subsided. Subsequently, I was quite sedentary for the entire first trimester. Once the subchorionic hematoma (that's what they called it) was diagnosed at 10 weeks, they monitored me weekly with ultrasounds to make sure it wasn't getting bigger and fortunately for me, by week 14 it was gone and so was my spotting/bleeding. I have been diagnosed with the same problem this time around (this is my third pregnancy)but since I conceived naturally, I am only seeing an OB. They said the area was very small and didn't think it was necessary to monitor it closely. They told me to take it easy and resume all normal activities when the bleeding stopped. I stayed in be for 2 days and then took it very easy for at least another week. I am currently at 14w4d and praying that it is healed and I will have no more problems with it. I have to agree with JenC though, you will feel better to rest and stay off your feet. Even though my OB this time told me that was not necessary, I did it any way, because psychologically, it made me feel better, like I was doing something. I am sorry this is so long, but I hope it helps to ease your mind. Please keep us posted and let us know how you are doing. ![]() Dawn |

D, I totally understand what you are going through. I had two bleeding episodes because of a subchorionic hemorrhage, and I was terrified. One at 14 weeks and another a week later at 15 weeks. I had gushes of bright red blood both times for a couple of hours (I filled a pad in an hour the first time) and then brown blood for at least a week after each. I was advised both times to "take it easy," but I went ahead and put myself on bedrest, and I rented a fetal doppler to ease my mind. After the second incident (the first day I had actually done something other than lay in bed), I remembered reading somewhere that another woman's doctor had recommended that she drink more water, so I really drank a lot of water--at least 64oz a day and most days more like 96oz. There may be no correlation, but it seemed to get better quickly, and I've had no bleeding since. At my u/s two weeks ago, the tech could see a small blood pool under the placenta, but yesterday at another u/s it was gone. Also, I had an amnio yesterday and the high risk ob I went to encouraged me to drink lots of water after the procedure for the next couple of days. The u/s tech further encouraged me to do the same thing before I left. She said that the uterus is a muscle, and just like you would drink lots of water when you exercise, you need to drink lots of water now because the uterus is expanding, doing a lot of work, and for me, it was just traumatized by a needle. Who knows whether any of this is true, but hey, extra water can't be all that bad for you.
I hope everything works out for you. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. And do let us know how you are doing. Hugs, Jenny

D.,
Being in the med. field, we always encourage patients to call if they are concerned. Your physician is there to answer your questions and take care of you. If you are worried about your condition, I wouldn't wait until the 17th. I hope you get some answers so that you can relax and enjoy your pg. Take care, Jan

Ladies -
Thank you all for the feedback. I knew I was not crazy to stay in bed. I also called my OB again today, and explained to the nurse everything that had happened. She had my OB look at the ultra-sound from the ER and he promptly agreed that I need to stay in bed until my appt on Monday so that also made me feel alot better. Hopefully all will be well. I will keep you all posted on our progress and thanks again for the much needed support. D. |
