CVS Results Inconclusive
By way of background, I'll be 35 at the time of delivery.
I am 13w4d pregnant and did the first trimester screening at 12w0d. The ultrasound portion went great - the doctor said all was good and the measurements were perfect so I was surprised when the final results (with the blood work) were worrisome. The Downs Syndrome came back good - 1 in 5600+ but the Trisomy 13 & 18 came back at 1 in 78. After some lengthy discussions with my husband, OB and a genetic counselor, we decided to go forward with CVS. Well, I just got a call from the perinatologist (who does 100s of CVS and amnios a year) and he said the results were "inconclusive" because they were not able to run the tests based on the sampling. He says this has only happened two other times in the last seven years - I guess the sampling was just inadequate for the testing - maybe he didn't get enough of a sample or the right kind of cells for the sample, who knows. This doctor came highly recommended and he and his clinic do more CVS and amnios then anyone else in the area. So now I have to decide whether to (1) do nothing; (2) do another CVS; or (3) wait to 15 weeks and do an amnio. I'm sorely disappointed that we didn't get "hard" results from the CVS. We went through the procedure and subjected the baby to risk of miscarriage for absolutely nothing! I was hoping to get some peace of mind today when I got the results but now I just have even more questions and more stress! I'm inclined to go with option 3 and get an amnio in a few weeks but am not sure I want to go through the risk again -- but then I don't know that I can handle the stress of not knowing for the next six months. Have you been in this situation or do you have any advise? I'm open to any and all thoughts or comments! Thanks.

Sorry you had to go through a CVS and then not get any results. If you are concerned then I would just wait for the amnio. I had mine done at 15 weeks 3 days. The test isn't that bad and they can do an u/s first and measure the best spot to get the most amniotic fluid and to be sure the baby is safe. If the dr. does a lot of them too - then your odds go way down for miscarriage. OF course, that is if you decide to go through with any more testing at all. I know it's a worry - these odds and everything - sometimes you wish we didn't have the technology. Also with the amnio they can check for neuro tube defects which can't be done on the CVS.
Good luck with your decision. Again, sorry you had to go through all this - it's hard enough to go through the decision, then the procedure - then the waiting - then to be told that - well, poor you. Barbara |

That's hard- going through all that only not to know! I do not know what to tell you about the other tests... there are some older threads discussing testing in general that you might find helpful. Let us know what you decide.

I'm so sorry that you went thru all of that and still know nothing! I know this is an issue a lot of us will have to deal with.
Was the 12 week scan the nuchal scan? I had questions about the level 2 u/s that they do. I believe its around 16-20 weeks. I wonder if this could give you any answers to your questions. I don't know too much about it, but I thought they measured different organs and it was a good indicator of the babies health. If you are planning on keeping the baby regardless of what the outcome is and the risk of the amnio is an option you really don't want to take, then maybe this level 2 u/s can help answer your questions.
