I was never offered CVS. Didn't even know about it until it was too late to have one. I wouldn't have anyway - the risk is too great. Amnio is safer, but still risky. I would have done amnio if there appeared to be a problem after the quad test, but test results were great so I opted not to.

I had it with with my 2nd (did an amnio with my first). It was offered by my OB and I had a highly qualified peri do both procedures. No problems, and would do it again. I agree it is a personal decision-good luck.

I chose to do it and I was happy I did. This test like the amnio is 100% diagnostic, so it's very comforting to get the facts/reassurances early on. I went to a very highly qualified dr in NY and she told me the risk isn't any more than an amnio these days.

All the best with your decision.

I have done a CVS test in the past. There is a risk, but it is low. I was also told that the risk is pretty much the same as an amnio. Other than your age, are you high risk for an abnormality? My peri asked me this: "what will you do with the information you learn?" If you woudl consider reduction/termination based on the results, then CVS is a much better choice then amnio (since it is done much earlier) If it's for peace of mind, there is also nothing wrong with that.

If you chose to forgo a CVS test (which I did in my second pg), you can ask your doctor to do a First Trimester Scan and bloodwork. The FTS is a non-invasive screening that will check for soft markers for downs, T-18 and some other chromosomal abnormalities. The bloodwork is (I believe) similar to the quad screen. While these are just screenings and not 100% conclusive, they are fairly good at picking up problems early on.

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck!

I'm pregnant with twins, I did an amnio @ 15 1/2 weeks. All turned out well and I'm now 33 weeks, 5 days today.

I read the risk for m/c with amnio is lower than with CVS, just thought I'd mention that.....

It's a personal choice only you and your dh can make...I wish you the best on whatever you decide.

loss mentioned

Just wanted to add to this post, since I have had amnio (with DS in 2002) and then CVS with a twin pg last fall. I chose CVS because we could have it done earlier, we were having twins, and considering our ages (me: 38, dh: 48) were considering reduction.
I had the CVS at Columbia in NYC--one the best in the country, but still lost the pg due to uterine infection two weeks later (one day after getting the wonderful news that everything was fine with the babies). We were devastated and blamed ourselves for quite some time. I had to remember that I work in the medical field and have always wanted to know everything I possibly could. I never imagined that those risks factors would affect me.

You need to make the choices that make sense for you at the time based on the info that you have at that time. Then you will know that no matter what happens, you did the best you could.

Good luck!
Kim
