Maternity fashions these days, yuck!

I am feeling old. I am 37 and hopefully having my 4th baby in September. My youngest is 4 yrs old, so I have not shopped for maternity clothes for awhile. The current fashions in maternity are not for this old body!

Most shirts have these plunging necklines. I teach high school and I don't want these kids looking down my shirt! Also, these body hugging shirts are not for hugging my lumpy hips and butt! Also, these stupid pants that are supposed to fit below the belly -- whose bright idea was that!! What happended to modesty? Why on earth would someone want to dress so that her big belly sticks our for all the world to see? Like my stretch marks and huge vertical scar are for anyone to see!

I feel old!!!

Oh my gosh I am so glad to read this post! Sorry / / / I am in the same boat.

I am having the worst time trying to look decent with this pregnancy. I gained a lot of weight before becomming pregnant ( with #2) and I am so sick and tired of my pants hanging below my huge belly and flipping over everytime I bend down! Not to mention the whole plumbers crack thing going on in the back! I am 25 weeks and cannot wait until I can wear my 3 almost 4 yr old maternity clothes I packed away. They are all summer things so there is no way I can wear them now.

Someone needs to talk to the motherhood maternity store shopper and tell them that not everyone wants their belly hanging out of their clothes. I asked the sales grirl if they had anything longer in shirts and higher in the pants and she said that wasn't the style. . . the style is to show off your belly. Please the last thing anyone wants to see is my overly stretcehd and stretched marked belly.

Good luck. . . Let me know if you find anything that we consider suitable!

Denise

Barging here.......sorry!

I just wanted to add an amen! I hate the short maternity tops. I have a long torso and regular tops are always too short, so when I am huge, even 'normal' maternity shirts become too short. I do not want my belly showing from under my shirt! I find that so tacky!

Seriously the 'cool' style for teens is super long shirts, so why is maternity clothing suddenly *shrinking*??

Years ago, when a friend of mine was pg, she said she only bought a couple pairs of maternity pants, and everything else she wore during her pg came from plus-size stores.

I'm 25w and don't have a big belly yet, but I did check out one of these stores last weekend and saw some really nice stuff (tops) that was nice and wide where we need it most. I'm a tall girl too, so I need length and I found quite a few things in there I could wear. And they were stylish too! I was a size 8 pre-pg, so not a big girl to begin with (I think the smallest size they carry is 12 or 14) but I did a little digging and found some "slim" styles where 12's and 14's fit fine.

Bottoms are a bit more difficult. I did find a couple of pairs of elastic waist pants in a dept store that aren't maternity but fit very well and are sooo comfy. Don't know how long they're going to last me though - I doubt I'll be able to squeeze a 35w belly into them.

I agree about Motherhood - a lot of stuff in there is for barely pg 24 y.o. first timers.

That's why you need to look on our Live Action bb if you haven't already and look at what they have to sell There were women begging for the "old" maternity pants that have the half moon panel in the front.... after going maternity shopping with a friend of mine- now I know why. I would love to pg again but I would hate having to look at the choices in fashion... I hope you all have successful shopping! There are days when you need to feel good about how you look.

I have the opposite problem...lol

I have been going nuts trying to find clothes that fit and are not what i call Granny/conservative
I am 5 feet tall and weigh 119lbs at 21weeks.
I dress very trendy still and almost had a stroke when shopping in the motherhood store etc.
Today i found some regular shorts (a size bigger) and some adorable tank tops in the regular clothing section at walmart believe it or not.
I love showing off my tummy and don't want to wear those "tent" shirts
also the other problem is that most matunity clothes don't come in my size
not even the cute pants
i wear sweats most days i am not at work though and they are oh so comfy

JCPenney does carry a nice "Classic Twill" maternity pant with the traditional half-moon stretch panel. I have two pair, black and khaki, and I love them. They are great for work (teaching).

Sometimes the plus size stuff is too big in the shoulders and bust area. I feel like they look too baggy then.

I haven't checked out the auction on FT, though. I will do that.

Hate those 'low rise' pants . . .

Betsy, I am so glad you started this post. I am still in the early stages (almost 10w), but already finding my regular pants are uncomfortable (at home I LIVE in my pj bottoms). I thought shopping for maternity clothes would be one of the more pleasant aspects of pregnancy, but so far I've found it quite depressing. I've managed to make it to 42 without a pregnancy (not by choice), and although I don't have stretch marks or scars, I do have a fair-skinned, 42-year-old, size 14, "not exactly a regular at the gym" type body, and I'm not mad keen on flaunting it during pregnancy.

I like to think I am reasonably fashionable for my age, but I HATE this 'low rise' obsession in pants. What's up with that?? Is this style actually comfortable on anyone? Or do most women (pregnant or not) care more about fashion than comfort?? Honestly, I think they look like crap on all but the skinniest and youngest of bodies, but what I really hate is they are so uncomfortable (on me anyway).

I swear 95% of the pants in maternity stores are 'low rise', and the remainder are an unappealing mish mash of fabrics, styles, and sizes. I just want to be able to walk into a maternity store, choose a style and fabric I like, find my size, and buy it. I wish!! I hate much of what's on offer in the stores, and many of the things I consider cute I feel are really too young for me (or just too little fabric). I don't want to look like I'm pretending to be 24, but nor do I want to look like a middle-aged frump. Oh well, that's my .02c worth. Good luck to all of us .
