Betsy - funny I was thinking the same thing about modesty. I'm not really showing yet but have been to one or two maternity stores just to see what's there. I see lots of clingy stuff. I don't want every roll on my body showing. Yuck. And most of the stuff for summer I saw coming out is sleeveless. I'm not a huge person but my wiggly arms aren't my best feature and I certainly don't want to show them off. I've also noticed a lot of pregnant women like wearing those shirts that don't quite cover their entire belly. I would feel way too self concious to do that. Don't get me wrong, I look forward to sporting a baby bump. I just don't want to show everything off.

I like the underbelly pants, the overbelly ones are painful and tight. Plus noone wants to see someone's pants stretched up to their boobs. Believe me you can see it right thru most maternity shirts ........like a panty line only higher LOL But to each their own. Wear what is comfortable for YOU! After all 9 months of pregnancy, you deserve some level of comfort at the very least! I buy most of my shirts in other stores than maternity, b/c you guys are right...they are wider but shorter!! Like that helps anything I just get long tank tops (easy to find most anywhere) and put a nice sweater/cardigan over them until summer when I will wear them plain. Hi Ladies-
I'm 34 and agree that I like keeping my "parts" covered. I found that shopping at Layne Bryant (a big girls store) was the answer - I got some larger streatchy pants from them that "hung" on me - no tight thighs. My belly is HUGE now and I do tend to keep the pants lower on my belly. I invested in a couple of very long shirts and sweaters and so far have found that it works well. I did not by the shirts at LB, rather I just went through regular stores and looked for stuff that looked longer and did not have plunging necklines. Best of luck with your shopping! Well, after my rant on 'low rise' pants I'm finding my regular jeans (which I can still wear but not so comfy) are automatically sliding beneath my belly after 10 minutes or so. Not that it's huge yet, but big enough to make the pants slip down. So, who knows, maybe low rise pants will turn out to be more comfortable with a pregnancy belly

2girls4me,
I actually like my pants to stretch up over my big belly. I believe this is most comfortable. I have had three full-term pgs and I never had my pants' seams showing under my shirts. I do not wear "clingy" shirts. According to catalog pictures, it is OK to let the "panel" or elastic band in pg pants peek out from under the shorter shirts. As far as modesty, I do see in pictures the actual flesh of the belly showing on some pg women. Anyone who has the "As Your Baby Grows" publication from American Baby can see most of the women pictured have their belly exposed. It is my impression that the purpose for the under belly fit of pants is to facilitate this exposure. Of course, one does not have to go that route, but it is hard to find long shirts. Sorry that my old-fashioned ways are out of date. I believe in full-coverage. I am not a large woman, just a modest, private one. Betsy 14w 4d 3 DDs -- 8,6,4 yrs old |

I found my low rise pants to be quite comfy in the beginning when my belly outgrew my regular rise pants.
However, I agree with betsy. Somehow I find the overbelly pants to be much more comfortable than the low rise ones now that I'm 26 weeks along. I dreaded these horrid looking panel pants, but when I tried a few on with proper longer shirts, I was pleasantly surprised. |

I'm only 29 years old but I'm stuck in the middle--I don't want to dress "old" and I refuse to dress "young." My solution has been Gap.com. I think the clothes are relatively trendy, but not too much so. They are also just enough modest for my taste.

I feel your pain. I'm not pg right now (but lurking and trying for #6) but I do teach HS and am very self-conscious about exposing myself. I also found the JC Penney has "traditional" belly panels + they have short, avg and tall sizes. I also found that Penney's had some "longer", stylish tops. You might check and see if your city (or larger ones close to you if you're rural) has consignment stores. I live 45 minutes outside of Kansas City and it has maternity consignment shop that a lady runs out of her home. She has stylish stuff and there are some more "conservative" tops + she sometimes has full panel pants. Also, if you sew or know someone who does, Kwik Sew (sold at Hancock Fabrics and Joann Fabrics) has a full panel pant/capri/short pattern. Simplicity, Butterick, & McCalls have some cute tops + Vogue has some classy patterns too.
