May I ask about chromosone 18?

Hi:

My best friends sister is over 40 and just told that there was a problem with chromosone 18 from the amnio. She is to see a specialist next week. Could you please give me some insight as to what this might mean?

Thank you!

I saw your post yesterday and have been hesitant to anwser because I don't want to give any false info. Are you asking about Trisomy 18? If so, I am trying to remember what my genetic counselor stated about this disorder. I seem to recall that it is very serious. I hope I am not speaking out of context.... if it is Trisomy 18 do a Google search for more accurate info. Sorry I couldn't help.

Thank you Tami:

She was only told she needed to see a specialist, something about chromosone 18. The DR said it may or may not be a problem. I am thinking it will most likely be a problem. I did a search for chromosone 18 and only came up with Trisomy 18 which is heart breaking. Is there ever any hope for babies with this? Could there be something other than Trisomy 18 that has to do with chromosone 18?

Thank you again for answering. The lady is 19 weeks btw.

It may not be trisomy 18 (3 copies of the 18th chromosome) but maybe a deletion or a translocation or missing part of one of the chromosomes. There is a lady bc-beckyc that has knowledge of genetic issues. You can find her on the genetic issues bb under infertility. You are a sweet friend to be so caring.

I just heard from my friend, her 6 month old grandson is terribly sick and has been in the hospital the last week +. She said her sister's baby is fine, that everything was okay. I didn't ask for details as she was upset and couldn't really talk. So, I guess prayers worked for the baby now we are praying very hard for this little one.

Thank you for asking. I hope you are enjoying the holiday.
