Nuchal Fold results (xposted on GP board)

Hi Ladies,

I'm hopeing for a little reassurance. I got the results back from my NFT yesterday. They gave me results in MoM (multiples of median):

DS 1:25, Trisonomy 1:81, NF 1.8 (MoM), NF actual (2.8)

Since I'm into my 14th week, a CVS test is out of the question. I will be having an amnio done in the 15th or 16th week.

Now, I've read these boards, I've read another board and many people have posted that after getting scary numbers like this the amnio's come out perfectly normal.

What are your experiences with this test? My first impression is that everything will be ok, but after my conversation with the Dr, she says that my actual NF is a little on the high side even though it's within the normal range. Has anyone else heard this? I'm 39 and I will have just turned 40 right before my due date. The docs are using 40 in the calcualations though. Seems I missed a bday somewhere!

Thanks for all your input, and hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Kathy

Kathy,
I cannot help you as I chose not to have any testing. I hope more ladies can post about their experience. Let us know.

I'm sorry you're going through this, if only it was as simple as a positive test and a baby at 9 months. In my case, while I haven't had an amnio, I did have a choroid plexus cyst on Level II ultrasound (soft marker for trisomy) as well as a borderline crappy triple screen.

The risk of m/c from amnio is 1:200 and my recalculated risks based on all the testing (cyst + blood screens+age--37) were just around 1:200, as in 1:190 and 1:210. I had detailed Level II and III u/s's, consulted a geneticist, my Peri and a Radiologist and felt confident that the baby was healthy and the risk of m/c from the amnio exceeded the value of having it done. The other thing is given my history of recurrent loss my chances of m/c due to the procedure were actually higher than the standard 1:200.

Lots of women I know have had amnio's and I don't believe it's particularly painful. Have you had a detailed USS to check for other markers of all Trisomy's or genetic disorders? This might give you more information and then you can decide if you want to go ahead with the amnio. I'd also suggest getting other opinions. While you might have full trust and confidence in your OB, talking to others with different skills, experiences and areas of expertise can only help.

Best of luck in whatever you decide.

Hi Kathy,

I just wanted to let you know I was 1:26 chance of having a(nother) Down Syndrome baby after my Nuchal Scan and blood tests. The NF measurement was 2.6. My age alone (39) and the fact that I already had one child with Ds had my odds at 1:52 before the tests were even run.

My baby boy was born on 11th Nov and he is just perfect.....I decided against an amnio as the risk was too great and also because of my DD with Ds....what sort of message would that have been if I terminated a baby because he had the same diagnosis as her?

Anyway I think the tests are terrible, I have heard of so many false positives.....with my DD I was a false negative (1:600)....so I don't put much weight to them at all.

Good luck with everything and if you need any info on Ds...please let me know.

Hugs

Nuchal Translucency

Hi Ladies, Thanks for all your replies. I'm feeling so confused right now.

I was all set for the amnio, but started questioning myself after reading about others experiences. Although many, many people have had positive experiences, there are that very few who have not. It seems the risk of mc due to amnio is low compared to the genetic risks. I have a call into my doc to talk about a level 2 us to see if any markers show up. If so, we could always do an amnio then.

I have a 13 yo biological son, and a 7 yo adopted son. Surprise or no surprise, I haven't decided if the risk of mc after an amnio is worth it. After I explained to DH there was a risk of mc he wanted to know why we were having an amnio done as well.

Thanks so much for your support...

Kathy

Hi:

I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but during my twin pregnancy Baby B had a nuchal fold measurement that was on the high end of normal. I spent the next 7 months stressing out about it.. but I declined the amnio because we wouldn't terminate anyway, and, to us.. it just wasn't worth the risk.

My son turned out just fine, he's a happy, healthy 3 year old right now!

I am sure my clinic (RE) will do the NF scan again this time (they never even told me what they were doing until it was done last time.. So I am preparing myself for the stress already!

Good luck!

Level II & Quad Results

Hi All..

I just thought I'd update you. We had our level II ultrasound today and the doc said it was perfect! She also gave us our quad results and that brought my risk from 1:25 to 1:220! The doc said although we can have an amnio done today, she doesn't believe we need it. If we do choose, we should do it in another two weeks.

We opted not to do the amnio and I am very comfortable with my decision.

Thanks for all your support!

Kathy

Hi Jen, Yes, it's a boy! I was so sure it was a girl...so much for intuition!

It doesn't matter to me though. I already have two boys, so I pretty much know what to expect from them.

Thanks for thinking of me!
