Questions, please help

Hi ladies,

I am wondering if you could help me. My mom who is 47 is going to be my surrogate next year. (I have had a partial hystorectomy). She will be using my and DH"s embryos.

My questions are: is pregnancy more difficult the older you are? are you more sick? feel more crappy? do you gain more/less weight? any concerns your dr mention due to your age??

My mom's last pregancy was at 32. I love that she is doing this for us and I want to be able to give her some tips in advance so that she can prepare for this.

Please offer anything else you think I will need. thanks so much

Love
Deana

Wow Deana-
What a precious gift! I am not sure what type of pgs she had before, but it might be a little different. I would have her followed closely, if it works, by a peri and a high risk ob. With increased maternal age- blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and etc may be watched for more closely. You may want to post this on the parenting +35 bb too. There are older mom's there that may have some advice. I look foreard to having you both here on this bb in a few months!

I was 38 when we did IVF and through most of the pg, and 39 when I delivered. Let me tell you, the dr's watch you like a HAWK in some places and some don't. Kind of depends on the dr and how well she knows you. I was in a new town for the first 20 weeks of the pg and was seeing the OB every THREE weeks in the beginning (as opposed to every four) AND the high risk dr pretty regularly to do every test that I would allow and pressure me on other tests.

I then moved back to my hometown and the dr's didn't watch me quite as closely because they knew me and my history (which was all pretty normal as far as health wise)

I do have AMA written all over my charts...I thought it meant American Medical Association, which I couldn't figure out why they wrote that...actually, it meant Advanced Maternal Age. Ugh.

Wow. Your mom is 47? I'M 47 and my one and only is 3!!

Yes, pregnancy later in life can be tougher on the body, but if your mom is in good physical condition and is fit, she should be ok. The OB will watch her for hypertension and gestational diabetes, which are two of the most common conditions in "older" women.

BTW, I was pg. at 43 and delivered at 44. My OB told me I was in better shape and of less concern to her than some of her patients in their 20's. I had zero problems during my pregnancy.

I think that it's a wonderful thing that your mom is willing to do for you. I hope that all goes smoothly.

Best wishes,
Janie
