has anyone had a false positve result with nuchal fold test b/c of age?
hi
someone told me that they take into account your age when calculating whether or not your baby can have downs when performing the nuchal fold test. based on this, has anyone had a false positive? i took the afp with my ds b/4 i decided to do an amnio. the afp came back borderline b/c of my age being a factor in the calculation. (a lot of ladies get false positives) so i did the amnio. i just dont feel like taking this test if it is going to come back as a false positive b/c of my age. i'd rather skip and wait for the amnio. thanks for your info!

I don't know if anyone responded to you, however the Amnio is the most accurate - so if you took that, there is no need for the Nucal Translunency test. Also, that needs to be down before 13w6d - so you are prob past that if you had an amnio.
good luck - I just also had a high AFP 1 in 100 chance of downs and now deciding to do the Amnio or not.. Good luck! I am sure everything is fine. Christie |

i havent received a response yet. i am 11 weeks and 1 day. i am supposed to take the nuchal fold test next monday. however, since your age is part of the calc, i am guessing that i will already start high since i am 38. its out of pocket for me so i may pass and just do the amnio. p.s. i had a false positive with the afp due to age. (w./ my ds who is now 18 mo and healthy) p.p.s. i am sure you are ok. remember your age will trigger a false positive for the afp. |

The nuchal fold test has nothing to do with your age. It is an ultrasound measurement of the thickness of the embryo's neck and general scan to see if all "parts" are developing normally.
I had this done when pg. at 43 and the nuchal scan was normal. So, I opted out of amnio. Hope this helps. Janie |

Like Janie- I do not think the NFT is factored on age. Post an update soon.

i spoke to my ob. the nuchal fold test takes into account your age when calculating whether or not your child has downs. the other part of the test is the measurement of the fat behind the neck. i read an article that says women over 35 have a 1 in 250 chance of a child with downs and the questionnable part with nuchal fold is if it produces a result in 1 in 300. my ob said since i am 38 i will already be leaning towards a higher result. my test is monday and i still havent decided if i will take it. thanks for your info- |

I STILL fail to see what age has to do with this test. Are you sure we're talking about the same thing?
I was FORTY-THREE, and the measurements were completely normal, and so were the test results. And so is my child, by the way. Can't hurt to do the test if your insurance covers it. Good luck! Janie |

Herewegoagain,
I just had my second nft.....Both time they measured thickness at the back of the neck........My OB's office hasnt called me back yet, but the radiologist came into the room while they were doing the scan, and he called in another dr..........So I'm not sure it is good news! The radiologist said my next step is going to a peri. And I'm not sure what will happen. The NFT test is an ultra sound...just like anyother..they are just measuring the thinkness of the lining of the spine(as I understand it) I asked for the test based on my age...I'm 37....so now we will see what happens. hi tracy-
the peri will prob want you to take an amnio to make sure what they see is correct. the amnio is full proof on chromosone abnormalities. (i'm not sure when the cvs test is given) anyway, i think the earliest you can take the amnio is 15 weeks. i HATE these tests b/c in my heart i always feel the amnio is the only one that can give you accurate results and if the others come out positive you have to wait for the amnio anyway. i decided to cancel my appt....since it was out of network and would cost me $400...and just wait for the amnio. i'm 12 weeks on sunday so its only a few more weeks. try to hang in there as best as you can. the amnio doesnt hurt. its just a poke and you are done. i'll be thinking of you. keep me posted. |
