35+ Declined Nuchal Translucency

Hi Everyone!

I am 35+ soon to be 36. I have been on top of things from the beginning. I had two ultrasounds confirming what week I was in prior to scheduling the nuchal translucency. When I went in for the nuchal translucency I was told that I was further along than originally told (doctor said two weeks further along) and he could not perform the nuchal translucency. The nuchal translucency has to be performed within the 11-13th week altho this doctor has 14th week on his brochure. I had an absolute meltdown after learning that the nuchal translucency could not be performed.

I went for a second opinion the next day. The second opinion confirmed that the doctor was wrong and indicated that I was not 15 w 6 days (or 16 weeks) but 14 weeks 1 day (at the time of the actual visit I was told I was 15 w 1 day). However, I was given this information on the way home (not at the office) and the second doctor did not ask me to return for a nuchal translucency.

As a consequence of being told that I am further along I have grown very concerned about timinig for the upcoming tests. AFP and a Level II Scan have to be done within a certain timeframe and if the due date is off or you are further along than you think things can become a bit messy and results inaccurate. What is really odd about this is that conception was a result of IUI (insemination), so I can actually pinpoint the actual date of conception and there should be no question. How is that I could be further along? Anyone have any idea?

I revealed the fact that the conception was the result of the nuchal translucency. Anyway, now I am left with the other tests that can be done, but don't have the nuchal translucency to complement the results.

Has this happened to anyone or does anyone have any information they can offer on the topic. Definitely need advice. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Nina

hmmmmm, are there any other OBs you can see?
I can see you are on top of things, yet you are not getting good communication with your clinic. If they are not communicating well on this topic, do you expect they will be better as you progress, and give you more details when you have additional tests? There is a larger window for the level ll u/s 18-21 weeks seems to be the norm around here locally. I do not know about the AFP- didn't do that with any of mine.

IMHO tell the clinic you are not happy with the communication so far and if that doesn't go well- then look elsewhere if you can.
Let us know what happens,
JenC

Second Opinion Sought

Hi!

I am definitely one for second opinions and I have no qualms about changing doctors...None whatsoever.

Anyway, for those of you who are planning on seeking the Nuchal Translucency Test, which is a very good test!!!!! It is important that you know your EDD. I was told one thing and when I went in for the test I was told I was too far a long for the test to be performed. Had I known that I was 1-2 weeks further along I would have certainly called and scheduled an appointment 1-2 weeks earlier.

My recommendation: ASk your doctor for an u/s around your 10-11the week....I had two ultrasounds prior to that time confirming my EDD, which all put me where I needed to be.

Second reccommedation.....ASK FOR A SECOND OPINION...if you are not comfortable. It's worth it...doesn't hurt.
