I agree Barby...a 1/200 chance is too big of a risk for us! After so many years, surgeries, and treatments DH and I are not open to ANY risk. I am having the triple screen done, but only because it is not invasive at all. I would like to know if I am going to have a child with any type of problem just so that we would be better prepared to offer the best care for its optimal well being, but I do not agree with doing anything that may cause me to lose this child.

Our little miracle:

Each day as I watch you struggle I am reminded to find joy in the little things, to stop and smell the flowers, and that some things are more important than material things. Your smile melts my heart, and takes the chronic pain away, if only for a fleeting moment. Thank you for the joy that you bring, my son.

Has anyone ever come across positive diagnosis of trisomy-21 after doing amniocentesis test, but the baby turns up to be perfectly healthy and does not have down-syndrome?

ck8269,
If an amnio came back + for trisomy 21 then there are 3 possibilities. The greatest possibility is the abnormal cells came from the baby. The 2nd is abnormal cells coming from the mom- not likely in this case or 3rd- lab error. I would not think the possibility of the last 2 would be very much. I have never heard of a false postitive amnio- anyone else?

Hi CK8269:

No - I am sorry - I have never heard of a false positive with an amnio at all - it is to my knowledge 100% accurate for the chromsome testing and nuero tube defects. Especially with the Trisomy 21 - or any of the chromosomes as they go through each one.

Maybe someone else has a story?

hi

This is an old post...but it's been a while since I've been around. I didn't end up doing AFP blood tests which is known to result in higher false pos. with twins (not amnio). We didn't want ambiguous results from blood work since it could of alarmed us to get amnios. I delivered both my twins---3 hrs apart! The whole time I kept (yelling) asking the doctors are my babies normal?! Two healthy boys! Whew... Now they're almost 8mos. old.
