Long distance flight OK? when 10wks pregnant

Hi Ladies,
I was on the infertility board for a while. I am 36 and dh 54. We've been trying to get pregnant for 6 years of which the last 3 years doing ICSI. We've had male factor as for our infertility problem i.e. low count, low morphology and low motility etc. Dh'd had a vesectomy reversal after 10yrs and has three kids from his previous marriage. We've had 4no fresh ICSI cyles with good grade embies but took us 4 fresh ISCI to finally get pregnant. I am now 8wks4d pregnant .
#1ICSI pregnant but no heart beat
#2ICSI negative
#3ICSI negative
#4ICSI positive- Appear to be three - 1no definite healthy heart beat but unsure about the second one and the third one has no heart beat . Waiting for 10th week scan to confirm the final count.
I am very happy but will be very worried until I reach beyond the first 3-4 months.
My question is: I have to travel due to work on a very long flight (15hrs). Does anybody know if it is ok or harmfull to my pregnancy. Has anybody had a similar experience or have any info.

Wishing you all the luck. Not sure on the flying thing though, but would be interested in knowing the answer.

I can certainly understand your hesitance to fly 15 hours. Sounds like an international trip.

Given your history, I think that you should talk to your RE and see what he/she thinks.

I flew during my pregnancy. If you do go:

-- make sure that you stay hydrated. Airplane air is very dry and worse when you are pg. Take bottled water with you and don't hesitate to bug flight attendants for water as often as necessary.

-- take snacks. Flying across timezones will mess up your meal times.

-- try to walk up and down the aisle a few times. Make sure that you get out of your seat once in awhile. Also, flex your feet and legs to avoid clots. Anyone traveling long distance should do this, anyway!

Best wishes,
Janie

Thanks for the responses!
It looks like the trip will not happen up until I am 12 wks. So that's a bit of relief. However it is still a worry as I have to do three of these long flights in a space of 1 month. Meanwhile I did some research on the internet about flying while pregnant. Radiation levels seem to be the concern (as they are higher at that sort of altitude than the earth surface), especially, if there are solar storms to cause flares during the flight. Some doctors dismiss these claims as saying the radiation exposure is not too great to affect the featus. However, a study showed that miscarriages among the female stewards are high, but then, they fly more frequently. I am worried but... I have to do these trips :' (

Just curious what kind of job you have and why you have to do 3 long flights in such a short period of time.

I am a worldwide marketing manager and travel overseas 3 times a year. When I'm gone it's for a few weeks at a stretch, which limits the number of long-hauls and time in airplanes.

Is there any way that you can combine trips and fly long-distance less often? Get someone else to cover a trip for you? Send me instead?

Janie

Janie,
These are relocation trips. We are being relocated overseas by the company and these trips are required for imigration purposes etc. So, I can't really send somebody else in my place, sorry

If you are going to one particular area- maybe your first trip should include finding an OB that you can consult with and will be familiar with your case while you are there or in route. Take good care of yourself.

I travelled extensively last pregnancy....from Sweden to Norway, from Sweden to the US and back, then from Sweden to Australia. I had no problems at all and in fact my m/s seemed better when I was flying

Just remember to drink loads of water, and make sure you walk around on the plane every hour or at least do some exercises in your seat. I was also taking low-dose aspirin which is recommended for all flights over 10 hours, but I would check with my OB first, just in case.

Good luck.
