Question hcg mystery

I'm 37, and am new to trying to conceive. After getting a positive result on home EPT on 4/12, only possible conception date would be 3/24, I'm having problems.

Sunday, 4/17, afternoon began bleeding and cramping. Trip to ER was traumatizing. Ultrasound revealed nothing - not even my left ovary oddly enough - after much searching. First HCG was taken and result was 28. Diagnosis was threatened m/c.

Greater cramping and passing of clots ensued on Sunday evening and continued through Tuesday. Tuesday's HCG results came back this morning at 48 and cramping and bleeding have almost gone away entirely.

Went in this morning (Fri, 4/22) for third HCG and am awating STAT results.

I feel completely inept here. Anxious for the results, but am willing to accept good or bad news. Does higher hcg mean good news??? Is is possible that I had what I consider to be a normal period (even with the clotting and cramping) and am still pregnant? Wouldn't I still be bleeding if I were having a m/c?

I also don't quite understand how far along I am - days since last period, days since conception, etc., so am having trouble relating hcg levels to what is normal range. Some scales for 5 weeks say 17 to a few thousand is the range. Can a preg still be normal even if it is in the low end of the range??

Guess I'll post again when I get the third hcg result. Thanks for any info or advice.
Cyn

Results of 3rd hcg are 71 - still going up.

Dr. doesn't want me to test again for a week. How can I wait that long? Shouldn't these numbers be doubling?

Stressed......

I think they want to see at least a 66% increase in 48-72 hours. I am not sure why your doctor is making you wait a whole week. That would drive me crazy! The fact that it is increasing is a good sign. What does your doctor say?

The doctor doesn't say much. My assumption is because there was an apparent drop in hcg (to 28 last Sunday), she is perhaps buying time to wait for a second m/c attempt. I know that sounds gloomy, but I don't know what else to think.

Bleeding completely stopped yesterday. So, with hcg going up and no more loss, I'm not sure what to think and this brought little reaction from the doc.

Another question: Is it possible that some women may produce ample progesterone on their own during this time, that hcg has a more limited role - thus not advancing at a high rate? A pre-existing hormonal condition? Maybe I should ask them to test my progesterone along with hcg.

For now, assuming hcg is still rising, I'm taking it easy and expecting some of my pregnancy symptoms to return.
Thanks for any advice you can give - not much response to my situation. I wonder if this scenario is incredibly unusual or if anyone else may have experienced the same thing.
