When is it safe to color hair?

I remember from my first pregnancy that I did not color my hair until I was in my second trimester. I was 5 years younger then and did not have so much gray hair. Is it safe to go to a salon and get my roots touched up in the first trimester?

My doctor told me anytime and most everything I read on the internet said it is ok too. Some Dr's and internet articles say to wait until 2nd trimester because most all major development is complete. I had my hairdresser do a quick 10 minute basebreak (root) touch up at 7 weeks and then waited to have full color and highlights done until 13 weeks.

Thank you Ladies. My nurse coordinator told me I can use vegetable dyes. I don't know if that is what my salon uses, but I doubt it. I am going to hold on a little longer, but doubt I can make it another 4 weeks when I get out of the 1st trimester. I plan on just getting the roots touched up and wait a while until I get highlights.

Hey Laenae,

I asked my doctor and they will not let me do anything although my hairdresser says it's fine. I'm going to wait till I go to my OB/GYN in the 2nd trimester and ask again.

Thanks Shell. I am going to ask my RE personally on Monday when I see him next. I really don't want to wait til second trimester, but if my RE suggests that, I will maybe use a Semi-permanent color that washes out after a few washes.

I keep reading there's no evidence hair color causes any problems, although in Organic Style magazine, they suggested using something natural (don't remember specifically what - sorry) for the first trimester.

I have way too much gray hair for my age, so it would be very obvious if I just quit coloring my hair. My compromise is to use semi-permanent hair color on my roots for the first trimester. (It doesn't work very well on gray, but it's better than nothing.) My hair stylists both said it's considered safer in pregnancy because it doesn't contain peroxide.

Thanks Catmom. I asked my RE on Monday before he released me and he told me to wait until I get out of my first trimester - another 2 1/2 weeks. I too have way too much gray for my age -- mostly around the framing of my face. My nurse coordinator told me to use vegetable dyes, but you probably have to order that online somewhere. It guess I will just bite the bullet now and wait or if I get desperate, use a semi-permanent color which most likely will not cover the gray as well.

Hi Lanae!

I know this is an older post but you can get those vegetable dyes at health food stores.

My RE also suggests to wait til after the first trimester....I'll be looking like Lilly Munster soon.

Hi ladies, I didn't ask until this week, and I'll be 12 weeks monday, but my obgyn said definitely, color - perm - whatever. However, I had already decided to wait until after 1st trim.
