nuchal/Amnio
I am VERY scared. Have my nuchal on Dec14th. Based on the result we want to decide if we want to go ahead with the Amnio.
I am 36 and this is my first after several ivf attemps ....so i dont want to jepordize my pregnancy unless the nuchal comes up with a risk factor. If i get a clean slate i plan to sit down with the genetic consultant to find out what are the stats of people with great nuchal results having bad amnio results....Has anyone been in a similar situation? if so, what did u do? Thanks, almost there!

I thinks it's totally reasonable to go with the results of the nucal screen. Im in about the same place you are it sounds. Im 38 with multiple losses IVF ect. I had a normal nucal and have decided to not have the amnio unless I have anything abnormal on the level 2 ultraound. After concideration and looking at statistics, the risk of the amnio (1/300 at my center) is higher than the risk for trisomy 21(Downs 1/700) and trisomy 18 (1/25,000). The statistics are probably better for you than I, as I am older. Unless you have any higher risk due to family history.
Good luck to you Elizabeth ttc 8 years multiple miss edc 5/30, baby girl |

hi ladies,
I am also in a similar situation, except I am much older. I am 46, I had the nuchal transparency and biochemsty done last week. My results came back good for my age, but not great. risk went from 1-13 for downs based on age alone to 1-120. and from 1-27 for trisomy 18 down to 1-7,000 after testing. the risks from amnio are still lower than my risk for downs (1-750 at hospital I had testing done at) I am just afraid, because I don't think I could get pregnant again after this. The dr. said all my test results came back normal, its just the age factor that throws the numbers up. I had a healthy baby boy at 43, and I had an amnio then. Its just scarier now. Does anyone know of anyone getting pretty good test results, than having a bad amnio? Patty |

abnormal amnio after normal ultra sounds
I have heard of cases the other way round that people showed elevated risk factors in the preliminary tests but the amnio's were always normal.
hang in there. My traslucency result came out good. Now the doctor wants me to undergo an AFP blood test and a detailed ultra sound next month and then if they come out good then I will probably not risk the amnio. I have been told by my IVF doctor and a cousin ( who is also a doctor) that since I had a myomectomy (fibroids removed) that makes the walls of the uteras weeker and may add to the risk level of the amnio. I will be praying for all 3 of us. It will be OK. lets keep each other posted. Take care, almost there! |

Hi All,
I am 37 and 34 weeks pregnant. We did a medicated IUI with acupucture. It took us 11 yrs for this baby. We did the nuchal scan. It came back fine. We refused amnio. OUr baby does have a heart defect found at 16 wks. We still refused amnio. We felt the risk of amnio was to great and we would not terminate the baby on that basis. We have had many level 2 ultra sounds. I am high risk bec of liver disease and my age and now the babies heart. We are seen at a Boston Hospital and lots of level 2's are common. Baby jacqueline is due soon. Her heart can be fixed. Not what we had hoped for but it is all up to God. Brandy |

This is refreshing to hear!
My high risk dr is doing the nuchal in 2 weeks...and my regular ob told me they will push for an amnio but it is totally up to me. He said the risks are 1/400 that something will go wrong..but since we did IVF it would suck to be the 1 and lose the baby. I would not terminate the pregnancy anyway, so I am most likely going to refuse the amnio...I'm sure of my age (38) they will push hard...but I will stand strong! Amy |

I did not find that my perinatologist or my OB pushed for an amnio. Im 38 almost 39. They both understood I would'nt terminate for Downs.
So I was happy with my non- invasive aproach( Nucal translucency/Level 2 ultrasound. Everything was normal. I would'nt be able to live with losing a baby to an amnio. After 6 years of trying and all. I think alot of women do feel pressure to do invasive test, although. Best of luck to everyone |

an update
Hi ladies,
I decided to go with the amnio. We would not terminate because of downs either, but there are many other trisomys that are alot worse, we would not want to have a baby that would only live for hours or days and be suffering. Also we felt if there were a problem that could be corrected, we would want to know about it and have the right doctors available at the time of birth. I had the amnio on Tuesday. Everything went well. It does hurt a bit and I had a little cramping and presssure, but the whole procedure was over in minutes. They also an ultrasound at the same time, so you can see the needle is not near the baby at all. The baby looked fine afterward, waiving arms, opening mouth, and crossing legs. They also had me go back the next day to listen to the heartbeat, it sounded wonderful. Hopefully I will get the fish results back by tomorrow, Monday at the latest. I feel pretty confident that the baby is fine, but I just needed to know for sure. I am 46, but the doctors did not push me at all to do the amnio, they said it was my choice, wether I needed to know or could be comfortable the rest of the pregnancy not knowing for sure. Patty |
