mattress issues

Hi ladies. We are experiencing a problem with Mason being able to sleep on his crib mattress. He sleeps just fine on our bed (even when we're not in there next to him), but wakes up every hour in his crib. We think it's because the mattress is so darn firm that when he rolls over from one side to his back or to another side, it wakes him up and is uncomfortable for him. Anyone else have this problem? If so, what did you do about it? I've tried putting a blanket under the fitted sheet, to soften things up, but that didn't work. And now I'm tempted to buy a softer mattress, but not sure if there are any out there (since crib mattress usually have to be firm to be safe). Any suggestions?

Have you been to BRU to look at them? I have a sleep n' more mattress. It is hard on one side and softer on the other. That may be better for him.

Are you sure he is bothered by the firmness? My son used to wake up in a cold sweat in his crib. I put a towel under his sheet and he sleeps fine now with the air circulation around him.

The only other thing I think I would do is to go to a fabric store and get foam to act as a foam topper on the mattress. I have the Quick Zip sheets and I am sure I could put in about 1 inch of foam if I wanted to in there. (Legal Disclaimer: Note I am in no way suggesting that YOU do this. This is just what I would do.)

Good luck!

Kyle was like that. I took a really really flat pillow and bought the organic mattress pad from BRU. I put the pillow on top of the mattress and put the organic mattress pad over the mattress and pillow and now it is much softer than just the firm mattress but not soft enough that he sinks into it or anything. Even the organic soft mattress pad made a difference and oh I also have a cotten crib sheet over the mattress pad as well.

Not in your group, but have you tried a flannel sheet?

Is the mattress kinda crinkly sounding when he moves? Our pack n plays were always like that for the boys and they could not sleep on them at all. We put a big fleece blanket over the mattresses and tucked it in real good. It helped some.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I like those ideas. We feel it really is the firmness, rather than the temp. And his crib isn't crinkly sounding (although I know what you mean as we have a pack 'n play too). We're going to check out BRU to see if there is a better mattress we can get, but if not, we may try some of those other suggestions (fleece blanket, foam, possibly the flannel sheet for softness). Somehow we have to find a way that he'll like sleeping in his own bed - I love cuddling with him, but we're not getting much sleep!
