    Group Strep B (GBS)

Have any of you ladies had any experience with GBS? I was told today at my OB appt that I am a carrier and all I know is that I hafta pickup antibiotics now and have them for when I deliver, and they may do c-section. I dont want to google, because I know I will just freak myself out, so if any of you ladies have experienced this PLEASE let me know.

I always tested negative, but at Bethesda (where I delivered) they just give you an IV antibiotic at delivery if you test positive (from what I understand-but don't quote me on that). I've never heard of anyone having a c-section because of it. I wouldn't worry about it because a lot of women are carriers. That's why they test for it. It'll be fine.

I tested positive for it when pregnant with my boys. If I remember correctly, they like to give you 2 doses of antibiotic in your IV when you go to the hospital to deliver. It seems like I remember the Dr. saying they like the doses to be a certain amount of time apart and they do prefer 2 doses but if they only get one dose in you, that is okay. It was no cause for a C-section. I had my boys vaginally.
Good luck. Don't worry. You and your little ones will be fine.

Hey BC, I just now saw this post of your. When I was in the hospital about 3 weeks ago for kidney stones I was having contractions and dialated some so they were afraid I was going to go into preterm labor, so they did a Group strep B test and I found out I was a carrier so they hooked me up to an IV of penicilin during my week visit at the hospital until they were confident I was not going to go into labor. They said having this is pretty common and no big deal, it just means that you will have to have an iv of penicilin during delivery because you could pass an infection on to the baby if they are born vaginally as they pass through the vagina. They will probably put you on anitbiotics even if you have a c-section just to be safe.

Sorry for the barge but I was positive with DD. I was with a midwife group/birth center. They recommended the bag of antibiotics during labor. My doula on the other hand wanted me to do all this natural stuff (hibiclens wash for the vagina and eat lots of garlic, garlic in the vagina, other stuff) and have them retest. They refused to retest me but during labor I was too dehydrated or my veins were hiding (both arms/wrists) that I never got the antibiotics. I didn't want them anyway after talking with my doula and trying all the home remedies because I was afraid of thrush (yeast infection in baby's mouth which affects bfeeding). I was fine, DD was fine, we were discharged from the birth center 12 hours after birth. A pediatrician came to check her out and declared her perfect.

You don't have to give up on your dream birth. You can try the home remedies and have them retest you.

Pepper, taking penicillin or some other type of antibiotic does mean giving up a dream birth. It is what it is. Not everyone is for natural remedies. I personal feel safer using antibiotics than the stuff you described. Testing positive for GBS is not a big deal, it is quite common.

My doctor just told me that I am positive. She said that it's common and what they will do is put the penicillin in the iv when I am in labor. I can't wait to have my baby boy. 2 more weeks.
