Confused about BH

Ladies I need some help. I am really confused about what is normal BH and what I should be worried about. I have been having BH since about 20 weeks, they were not really frequent, maybe a couple a week. As the weeks have passed they have become even more frequent, from a couple a week to a couple a day to now a couple an hour or every other hour. I have been telling my doc about them at every appointment. When my doc asked me at this last appointment if I have had any contractions, in which I told him yes. He asked me how many in an hour? I told him around 1 or 2 an hour or a couple in two hours. Doc told me that as long as I am not having 6 in an hour then the others are not even worth mentioning. And if I started having them 6 in an hour that I needed to lay down on my left side and drink Kool-Aid. After we left I tried to explain to DH this is how things started with my DS and he ended up being a month early. But instead of listening to me and he tells me basically that my doc went to school for this and I didn't so I don't need to worry. So at this point I don't know what to do. Last night they were anywhere from 3-14 mins apart for several hours but I refused to go to the hospital bc they were not 6 mins apart and I didn't want to drag the kids to the hospital just to be sent home. Oh and I did try laying on my left side and drank Kool-Aid. I guess it helped bc they did stop after about 2 1/2 hours. But I had a really painful one that woke me up around 3 this morning and have been having some off and on all day, but nothing regular.

I am not sure if I should be taking these serious or if they really are no big deal.

If they are painful, go in. Demand a NST be done. Be a giant pain in their rears if you have to, it's worth it. With me (and I ended up on meds and bedrest with #2 after #1 being a preemie) the BH contractions started about easy and far apart. I would mainly only get them when doing something physically active, cleaning, pushing a full shopping cart, etc. They didn't hurt, but I could feel my stomach tightening and if I pushed on it, it was as hard as a rock. When they started hurting I was sent for a NST and, lo and behold, they weren't BH, they were regular contractions. I ended up with some shots there and meds and bedrest when they finally let me go home.

Demand a NST and even a FFn test, too. I had that done at the same time and it was a big help to my piece of mind that it showed I shouldn't go into labor in the next two weeks.

Thanks for getting back with me. I hate calling the doc bc they always make me feel like I am bugging them. But I guess I am going to have to start bugging them just for some piece of mind. Thanks again.

The fact that you are pregnant with twins and your singleton was 4 weeks early, should make your Dr take action.

At 23w5d I went to the hospital for what I thought was a kidney infection. When your early in pregnancy contractions don't really feel like contractions do when your 40 weeks. I had no clue they were even contractions. It just hurt when I tried to stand up. So if they are waking you up at night NOW they MIGHT be something more. As it turned out, I was Preterm Labor and was in and out of the hospital and on bed rest until my little man was born at 37w.

My only advice is when they start to be painful, GO TO THE HOSPITAL. I know its is a BIG pain in the a$$ but I found that Dr's really don't take you all that serious in the beginning, so if nothing else and they send you home, at least you will have gone so that next time they will take you more seriously. I agree with BC-3boys2luv, go in and demand a NST if they stay painful.

At 27 weeks (as I see you are from your ticker) you should NOT be having that kind of contractions. My Dr gave me the 5 in one hour rule at 35w, NOT 27w!!!! I was in the hospital on Magnesium (sp) for 3 days when I was having contrax 4 times in an hour.

I'm not saying your Dr is wrong and to honest he is probably right, but with your first child being a preemie and your only 27w with TWINS, don't wait until it's too late. Play it safe and head to the hospital any time you have a prob. Most likely they will send you home and everything WILL be fine but, you know the saying "better safe than sorry"

Good Luck!!!

Thanks Aly
If they are painful I will be going to L&D. Most of the time they pretty painless but then there are those that out of no where that make me say wow where did that come from. I have also noticed with the ones that hurt I also have what I can only call cervical not really pain but a twinge. I am not really sure what to call it.

When I had my son I remember having contractions. I would go into the hospital they would hook me up to the monitors and they would stop and they would send me home. We did this a couple of times till I was that's it no more. I continued to have them but would limit my activity and they would go away. The day before we had him I had one huge contraction, told my ex that this one was different from the others. I refused to go to the hospital at first, I laid down but they didn't stop. We finally called L&D later that night bc I was starting to hurt. Told them I was 36 weeks and the wonderful nurse told me that it was nothing to take some pain meds and that I could continue to do this for the next few weeks. By midnight I was in so much pain I was in tears, this time we didn't call we went straight to L&D. I told the nurse that I wasn't leaving until they figured out what was going on. After they checked me out they realized I was in labor, the doc never tried to stop my labor. She said that I was close enough to my due date that they were going to let me deliver. I honestly think bc the doc didn't stop my labor my son was born and couldn't breath. He spent a week in the NICU bc when they bagged him to get him to breath they caused a huge air bubble in his chest. I know a week is nothing compared to what some families have gone through, but this could have been avoided. Thankfully this is not the same doc or hospital but that feeling of not being taken seriously is starting all over again.

Another reason why I am not being as pushy as what I should be is bc I am trying to keep from missing to much work right before the kiddos start school. Bc my temp disability will not kick in for two whole weeks after I stop working, and with school starting up we have school stuff to buy and still have a ton of stuff to get for the boys. I have been coming home from work and laying down all evening and that seems to help a bit. I am still having some contractions but not nearly as many.

Sorry that was so long. Thanks ladies for your replies.
