Ansley has been going up and down stairs independently around here (our house) for what seems like several months now. Today she was trying to walk them up by holding onto the hand rail. Usually, for purposes of efficiency, when we are out somewhere, I'll carry her up and down.

She's really good with them and follows her older brother around. That whole trying to keep up with the older sibiling does influence some of the developmental milestones I think. You'll see for yourself when #2 comes along.

DS has been going up for some time. He would like to walk down them, but would fall for sure as he can't quite reach the rail. Most of the time, I carry him up and down for efficiency same as you Trish.

Dylan has been doing it for a while. He is starting to try to hold on and walk up like a big boy.

We don't use flights of stairs much, but a few steps outside they go up and down holding either the rail or the wall, or sometimes my hand.

Coming down is sometimes a bit daunting for them, and they go down backwards, but up is usually stepping, R doesn't even hold on for less than three at a time

You have absolutely NOTHING to worry about in regards to stair climbing. Probably the best thing you can do is to offer him lots of practice. If you have stairs in your home, let him go up and down the stairs by himself (you will probably want to watch him of course). I think experience is the only thing that can lend itself to these sorts of developmental task. I'd say by the time your baby arrives, he'll be an 'ol pro getting up and down the stairs by himself. Even if you had baby in one hand and held his hand, that would be better than carrying the both of them.

K climbs up and down all the time in the house. Freaks out xDP when I let her do the basement stairs on her own. She's very careful and I think daycare also sends her up and down on her own. If we're out and about she typically demands to be carried, or if I'm lucky, she'll hold my hand and walk them. She doesn't walk them, but uses hands, bottom, head, whatever is handy to keep herself balanced.

B learned over the holiday v/k since my Mom has them in her house. He had no problem but I was still hovering like a helicopter over him!

also - we did teach him how to come down backwards crawl & not walk using the railing
