Zero Motility & 1st Urologist Visit
So...my DH has had two SAs. They were about 3 weeks apart and the results from each were similar. All counts are good (not sure the exact #s) except his motility is 0%. We just started IF testing a few weeks ago. All tests on me (hormone bloodwork and HSG) came back normal. My OB/GYN is referring us to a fertility specialist and expects that the first step will be for DH to see a urologist.
I have two questions... #1 - Does anything improve ZERO motility? I mean, zero...really?? I've seen several posts about improving low motility, but can you improve zero? #2 - What purpose will a urologist serve in this case? What does the urologist do? If his motility is zero, can we just skip the urologist and go straight to some form of treatment? We're paying for every bit of this out of pocket. We're already in about $2K and have done testing only. I just hate to keep paying for testing. If we're going to pay for something, can we pay for something that could result in pg? Thanks for listening and any direction is appreciated!

MLE.RENEE You've posed some great questions. I don't think there is a right answer. I think you should consider your own personal preferences. I can tell you about my, somewhat similar, experience.
We'd TTC for exactly 4 years before seeing any RE/Urologist in Mar this year. I had made my DH see his regular Dr prior to that point and he'd offered us cialis. So, I was impatient at that point. The urologist charged us a consult fee of a few hundred dollars. He sent us to our regular HMO lab and they told us we had "no result", which the dumba** urologist interpreted to mean we need rectal electroejaculation. This procedure cost $1,500 and would still necesitate IUI or IVF. So, IMO, urologists can have a tendency to reccommend less effective treatments since that's all they can perform. It turned out my DH had millions of motile sperm when we went to a better clinic. After paying for 3-4 consults, we decided to go straight to IVF w/ICSI because 1. We didn't want to "waste" money on less effective treatments and 2. I was impatient. There is research out there that supports the fact that skipping straight to IVF is cheaper in the long run and gets you preggo faster. If we hadn't been TTC for 4 years, I probably would have considered vitamins and other less effective treatments. I have heard success stories on FT about improved morph and motility from these (even though some RE's would disagree.) You just have to take the meds for at least 3 months (the length of time it takes the body to make sperm) and then keep TTC a few more cycles after that. The other thing I had to take into account is that my DH doesn't have the personality type to be super pro-active and diligent about pressing his Dr's and taking all kinds of supplements, so I felt IVF would require less effort from him and I was ok with that. |

cuba and iMama, thank you so much for you posts! It is nice to know that there are other people out there dealing with the same type issues. We have an appointment scheduled for Nov 16 where we should get a game plan together and move forward from that point. Thanks again!
