Normal count but low motility/viability?

Hi everyone! I'm new here so forgive me if this has already been discussed.. but I can't seem to find much about my DH's specific problem. He had a semen analysis last week which indicated he had low motility (18%) and low viability (20%). Everything else was normal, including the count (50 million).

We have our first appt. on the 25th with the RE.. I'm sure we will get most of our questions answered then.. but I was just curious if anyone else here has had this experience and what your options were/what worked for you.

I can't find much online regarding this and I want to be as informed as possible before our appt.

Thanks!

I was wondering what viability meant as it is not a stat I have seen before. As for motility there is some good research showing that L-Carnitine can make an improvement. Here is a good post about a vitamin cocktail that might work for you.

Hi IT Guru...thanks for replying! I'm assuming low viability just means DH's sperm aren't living very long.. but you're right it's not something that seems to be on many SA results.. for some reason it's on ours though! We have our first RE appt this Friday.. so I will definitely be asking all about it as I can't find much info online.

DH has already started all the recommended supplements, including L-Carnitine, so I guess we will see down the line if it made a difference. Hoping that it does!

I don't know if your RE has a full lab like mine but I would prep to do a SA right then. I know on our first visit with our new RE he was like "...can you do it today?...". Oh and write down all your questions before hand so that you don't forget any, I had 3 pages of questions.

Good Luck

Yes they do have a full lab.. I will make sure DH is "prepared" just in case.

Thanks for the tips...and good luck to you and your DW as well.

I found out that the viability number is the amount that are living and that most of the time you will only see that number on a Strict/Kruger analysis.

Interesting... well I'm pretty sure that Kruger is the most "strict" analysis so to speak... but either way with my DH having only 20% viability I would read that to mean that 80% of his sperm were dead.

We have our RE appt. tomorrow so hopefully we will get some more definite answers...

You'll have to let us know how your Appointment goes. I'm sure you'll walk away with more tests and questions then what you went in with.
