Hi,
My husband has recently been diagnosed with aszpermozia after two sperm analysys showed nothing at all. We are going through the process of finding the exact cause and have been reffered for fertility treatment by our gp. My husband has got one of the mutations for cystic fibrosis so although he doesnt have the condition he is a carrier. Also his gp mentioned while examining him that he could not feel any tubes. I have had some bloods taken and we are waiting for these results. The endochrinoligist that we saw seemed a little more positive that some sperm would be found in his testicles and has advised that we opt for icsi. He also has a high fsh and lh with a normal testosterone level. I have two questions. 1. if the problem is purely due to tubal malformation due to cystic fibrosis gene is this NOA or OA? 2.what can we do in increase the chances of there being some sperm to use? He has already stopped smoking and drinking, stopped hot baths and is having cool showers, and is also taking a well man supplement as his diet was definiatly lacking in vit and minerals before. many thanks Amy

Hey Amy,
My husband and I are in a similar situation to you. Although tests showed that he does not carry the CF mutation, he also has congenital absence of the vas deferens. (Originally we were told that he probably was a carrier; however, its just a fluke that he has the same condition...no idea what caused the CAVD). I believe that it is considered non-obstructive azospermia. We were both tested for the CF gene, since I have it in my family and we were both negative. Our local urologist seemed to believe that my husband didn't make any sperm and referred us to a specialist in Houston, TX, who was very confident that he did. In April, my husband had a MESA and they extracted 14 vials of sperm, which we are using for IVF now... embryo transfer is in the morning! At the beginning of this journey, I was very discouraged and depressed. Just wanted to let you know there is hope! Oh...before my husband had the MESA surgery, I tried to get him to take a multivitamin. He didn't smoke and rarely drinks, but they didn't tell us to do anything at all to increase sperm production prior to surgery. Rachel |
