Success with IUI after MESA?
My DH was recently diagnosed with absent vas deferens. He is going to undergo a MESA in April to retrieve sperm. The urologist mentioned that I would need to get into an IVF program near my home (we are traveling out of state for MESA procedure). But I was wondering if anyone has had any success with IUI using sperm retrieved from a MESA procedure, not sure if it is an option or not. Any info would be appreciated!

My hubby recently had the MESA procedure done. For a little history, he had a failed vasectomy reversal.
We also had the same questions you have about IUI. Especially since there were no problems found with me during pre-testing.The way I understood this was that because the sperm are taken before they are fully matured they could not swim or have the strength to penetrate the egg. Also, even though they will collect billions of sperm, this would only be enough for one cycle of IUI. We have just started the process of our first cycle of IVF, I start my protocol next week, so I am not very experienced but would be happy to try to help answer any questions you have. I hope I helped to answer some of your questions

KKNY,
You are correct. I ended up talking to my dr and thats exactly what he told me - not enough sperm & they aren't mature enough to find their way. Thanks for replying! DH has surgery on April 1st & our first appt with RE is May 12. Good luck with your cycle! Last edited by RachelRN; 03-12-2009 at 09:30 AM. |
