Very Confused
My husband and I were married in June (2004) and knew that we wanted to start trying for children right away...we were told that at our ages(I am 39 and he is 41) we could possibly expect some problems conceiving.....well after four short months of trying we found out that we were pregnant. Unfortunately I miscarried shortly after that(this past November). My OBGYN recently told me that it was a great sign that I got pregnant and that perhaps we should try a few more months on our own. In addition we have gone through the initial rounds of fertility testing and no problems have shown up for either of us. We are scheduled to see the fertility doctor today and I know that he is going to be fairly aggressive in his approach based on our ages......we are very confused and not sure which route to take...we are leaning towards trying for a couple of more months on our own....and if that doesn't work moving forward with treatment through the fertility clinic...any advice from anyone ????
Thanks

Yes, it is a good sign that you were able to get pg on your own.
The general rule of thumb for a woman over 35 is to go 6 months of ttc unsuccessfully before seeking fertility assistance. You got pg. on your own despite the loss, so will be interesting to learn what the RE tells you today. From 35 onward, a woman is more likely to m/c due to chromosomal defects in the embryo. You may want to ttc on your own for awhile before engaging in what could be expensive infertility tx. Post an update for us after your consult. Best wishes, Janie |

Hi,I would go with what my instinct tells me too.Just don't waste alot of time.Since there are no problems you should try a little while longer.Just wanted to give my two cents.Good luck with whatever you decide.Hope you'll be on your way to motherhood soon.

Hi,
I'm so sorry for your loss. The only thing I would like to add from someone who started ttc at 35... We went through many years with the diagnosis of "unexplained". We went through multiple IUI's, IVF's, etc. unsuccessfully. As a last resort, we sought some advice from a reproductive immunologist. After finally getting a diagnosis, and rcv'g tx, we were successful. Not only can a RI help get you pg, but they can work with people who have a hx of m/c. I hope you never experience another m/c (I've been there and I know how painful it is). But if you meet with the RE and find you don't have an official diagnosis, consider RI. It's not always covered by insurance, and honestly many doctors don't buy into it. But I wish we had looked into it sooner. We have an immune issues bb here if you would like to learn more about that. Good luck!! Cel |

Follow Up to Consult
We had our appointment yesterday with the RE and he agreed that we continue trying on our own...based on the fact that I am ovulating regularly (on the 13th or 14th day consistently) and that I get my period every 28 days and that my FSH levels have been consistently in the 6-7 range and that my HSG came back positive...he said that most likely, even though I am 39 my body is functioning more in the range of a 33 - 34 year old. We have decided to give it another 4-5 months ttc before the next step...at that point he suggested IUI with the lowest dosages of injectables. Any insight on this ???
Thanks for all that responded... |

Well, all of those results sound positive so far. I can see why the doctor wants you to ttc on your own for a bit longer. However, definitely don't wait if you aren't successful after a few months. Time seems to pass much more quickly when you're ttc at our age!
