What are you reading these days?

It's cold and blustery here, and I am seeking some inspiration. What are you reading?

I am re-reading Dorothy Sayers' mystery Gaudy Night. It's quite fun--set in an Oxford women's college in the 1930s.

Any recommendations for a good read? Fluffy suggestions are fine--I don't feel motivated to try anything particular difficult right now.

I am reading Barbara Lewis' (I think that's her first name) The Postcard. It's good but I'm not moving along as quick as I'd like.

I LOVE anything by Jodi Piccoult. Although not usually a "light read" they are good. Nineteen Minutes, My Sister's Keeper, The Pact, Plain Truth...all great books!

Melissa, you are reading one of Beverly Lewis' earlier works. It does pick up, and I enjoyed it, but I've enjoyed her newer series much more. Get the series about Abram's Daughters---loved it! It amazes me how much she knows about the Amish community, and I find it all fascinating.

Juliet, I've had the 7th Harry Potter book sitting on my dresser for 2 weeks. I keep meaning to read it.

Beth,

A friend of mine gave me this book to read. It's three books in one. I think it's so overwhelming because it's, well three books in one. I feel like I read and read but make no progress. I need to see about getting just "The Postcard" from the library and see if reading the books one at a time makes any difference. I like the story though. It's an easy enough read. I'm amazed by all the facts too.

I've read some of Beverly Lewis' books, but don't remember which ones.

I have Nineteen Minutes, by Jodi Picoult sitting on the bookshelf right now. I need to make time to start it. I keep thinking I'll read it during Spring Break, but don't really see that happening either.

Liet - How are you feeling? Better I hope!

Yes, I am feeling better...finally! It was a brutal case of the flu, mostly because I had a hard time talking! I was out of breath and finding it hard to speak...and for a chatterbox like me, this was miserable!

What I read over my illness:

Slammerkin, by Emma Donoghue--I really liked this, although I can't say it was cheerful. It's set in the 18th century, and the story of a girl who becomes a prostitute in an attempt to escape her dismal, cheerless life. I thought it was a great read. Loosely based on a true story. If you have ever read Sarah Water's Tipping the Velvet, it's quite similar in feeling.

Queen of Babble, by Meg Cabot--super fluffy chick-lit. I like some of her other works better--especially the Princess Diaries series and The Boy Next Door. This heroine is not as compelling for me. I'm still reading it--maybe it gets better toward the end.

Standing in the Rainbow, by Fannie Flagg--very fluffy, up-beat novel set in 1940-1980s Missouri. This is the second time I have read it--I really enjoyed it.
