Emily and Paula did not start Kindy reading. They had no interest so I did not push it. They knew how to read a few words here and there but I did not consider them "readers". I'm really happy with the progress they are making and quite surprised actually.
At the beginning of the year both of their teachers told us that they would read at the end of the year and I just told myself..yeah, right!! LOL
This morning Paula almost read me the entire "Ten Apples up on top" book with a little help on certain words. It totally blew me away. That's far from being able to read because that book has a lot of sight words but I was still very impressed. They are both doing AWESOME learning their sight words and I think it has clicked to sound words out.
Emily wrote me a note the other day: Good Morning Mama. I like you.
I think she copied the "Good Morning" from their "Good Morning message" that the teacher writes. I LOVE this stage.

I know! Isn't it amazing. Same thing here. The teacher said they would be reading by the end of the year. Alex read me part of Dora's The Halloween Cat this morning. It has a few pictures for some of the words, like haunted house and a few others. But, she knew a kit of the words and sounded out the others. She wrote an entire page of stuff the other day by sounding it out and asking for help on some words. Izzie is doing as well as Al, but she's not as outward about it.
We have a list of sight words that they're working on in school by week, but I made flash cards of all of them. And, we're working on them all at the same time.

They say Rianna will be reading n German by the end of the year as well. I have not pushed the English stuff because she is so overwhelmed and tired after homework. I just keep reading to her at night and hope she will catch up with time. I wish DH were home more at the moment because his German is much better than mine, unfortunately he is traveling quite a bit.

Landon started showing some interest in reading before school started, so I bought some stage 1 readers and started helping him sound out words. He was REALLY slow though. Now, he knows tons of words just by looking at them and reads pretty well! He tries to read everything...everything that comes on TV, signs on the road, etc. He loves it! It makes me happy that he likes to read...it may not last long, so I'm taking advantage while I can!

Loving this stage too and all the progress with school.
Not reading fluently here yet - but definitely showing improvement. Reading simple 3 letter words and some 4 letter ones.
Knows a number of sight words too.
I've been getting stage 1 reading books from school and the library and he manages them quite well.
I love it when he reads to us : )

Lindsay is doing okay I think. She is on level b and c - higher with help. She asks how to spell things all the time and sounds out words pretty well.

I think it's the most amazing developmental milestone yet out of all of them. Timmy reads to his sisters at night and I sit there in tears most nights!!!

Wanted to come back and updated on the reading.
Paula has made unbelievable progress. She is reading complete books now. Not sure what level but she can pretty much pick up most any book and read it with just a little help here and there. After she learned the Kindergarten sight word list her reading exploded.
Emily is just a few weeks behind her. I can see she is heading the same direction. Making excellent progress in her reading and it helps that she often sits right next to Paula while Paula is reading. Although paula is at a much higher level I think Emily will be heading that way because Emily is learning from her sister now.
Funny thing is that my days of being able to spell words to daddy to keep them secret are over... LOL

Rianna Update
Rianna is catching on reading in German...I have a tutor for her once a week to make sure we are keeping up with it. Mommy's German is just not good enough to teach. She desperately wants to read in English, but when we do it, she is using the German phonetics and it is confusing. I don't want to confuse her anymore than she is, but I don't want to hold her back and say she can't learn english reading. Friend who home schools turned me on to a computer reading program, think I will get that and she can play that when she wants to learn the English. I think she will catch on fast, I just don't want to push or overwhelm. But we only have a year and half and we will be back stateside, so I will need to get working with her so she doesn't fall behind. Really like that she is in German school and getting all these different experiences, just a little overwhelmed at the moment.
