IVF - Multiple IVF'ers This is a place for those that have gone through or are going through IVF and have done multiple IVF cycles. There maybe mention of other children in posts. Undergoing IVF can be physically, emotionally, and financially draining, particularly for women who are unsuccessful and proceed with another or multiple IVFs.

I guess alcohol between cycles is bad

I thought I'd share this somewhat depressing article about alcohol and IVF. After my last failed cycle, i definitely indulged in wine during the time between finding out about the BFN and starting the new cycle. Based on this article, it looks like that's NOT a good idea (even for DH) as it could cut the chances of having a live birth by 25%. The article also says ""Eggs and sperm take at least three months to develop so women have got to stop smoking, reduce alcohol consumption or, if you are overweight, correct that weight that far ahead if you want to maximise your chances of conception."

It looks like there are a lot of people who have some alcohol between cycles. My RE never said anything about this -seems like he should.

Here is the link to the article:
BBC NEWS | Health | IVF couples warned over drinking

Can this process get any less enjoyable?

Wow! Pemmie, thanks for sharing the article. I have been completely dry for probably more than a year due to how alcohol affects me (my husband is a different story- but what can you do?), but my teetotaling certainly hasn't helped me get a BFP. Can I blame it all on my husband ? I do think it's good for people to learn about this though.

I guess there are other things that can be just as comforting in grief... can't think of any off the top of my head right now. Anyone else?

This is really interesting. I wonder how much ahead of IVF men can drink without affecting its success. I can understand why women have to start preparing months in advance, but they don't really say why the timing would be the same for men (or if it is). Getting my DH to stop drinking beer for several months would be quite the challenge.

Apparently, I can't read - it does say 3 months ahead for both sperm and eggs. Color me surprised.

I totally disagree!

hi everyone..I'm bored on day 2 of 2ww. I am 39.5..this is my 4th IVF. FSH 13.8....
This cycle is best so far.... Retrieved 21, 19 fertilized, 17 on day 3 ( 13 perfect 8 cells and compacted and 4 6-cell) this is the first time we went to blasts stage..transferred 1 expanded 4AA and 2 early blasts AA....let the other 3 culture to day 6..lost one and froze 2 expanded perfect blasts. i have ohss...so swollen..wow.it's uncomfortable.

docs can't believe the difference in quality and quantity this cycle- attribute these changes since last cycle in July: new great acupuncturist, high sexual activity up to 1st week stims, partied my butt off including some drinking up to 4 days before stims started, lots of laughing and no baby thoughts, dancing every day up to 3 days before ER..(ovaries hurt too much) and bodytalk.

Wishing everyone ++++++Betas! God bless you!
Kristina

keep us posted - would love to hear a conflicting case! i never had a problem w/ egg quality (or so they tell me) but for some reason, my blasts never "took". I don't know what the deal is - i'm going to try a few months dry and see what happens. it won't be fun but i guess it can't hurt.

good luck to you!!

I drank while stemming (just wine with dinner) for my IUI's and then we had a party the 2nd day of stemming for IVF and I had a margarita and felt really sick (on much higher dose of meds) so didn't drink the rest of stemming and got BFP (she is 9 months now) I don't know. I never thought too much about alcohol (it probably depends on the person and whatever their problem was. I was doing accupuncture too so who knows. I did get pregnant recently accidently and was having occasional wine here and there not like before I got preg. with daughter where I had it every day.
