stimulation med dosages... makes no sense!

Hi everyone-

I am in the middle of my first IVF cycle after a long road of failed IUI's, one pregnancy that resulted in miscarriage, and a lot of worry! I just started my stimulation meds last night. The mixing of all the meds is so confusing and I started to worry tonight that I'm doing something wrong. I am taking Gonal-F 150 units, Lupron 5 units, and Menopur 75 units.... they gave me instructions on mixing all these meds together into one injection. The problem is, after I mix the Gonal-F and the Lupron into the Menopur powder and draw it all back up, I end up with less in the syringe than I started with! It was somewhere around 75 units of liquid, and that makes no sense. If I put 155 units of medication into the Menopur, how did I end up with only about half that amount to inject? Where does the rest go? Does anyone know???

Please tell me I'm not doing something wrong

Thank you!!!!

Im not an expert and may be wrong, but are you sure they told you to mix them together in the same syringe?? That just seems dangerous to me...are the meds a cloudy color when mixed?? Lupron is usually in an acidic base and the Menopur I thought was supposed to be mixed with sterile water. I am not trying to scare you I may be wrong but I would defintely call your RE to double check.

Nelly,

Did you use a diluent (sodium chloride) to mix it all with? I have never used the Gonal-F, so I'm not sure if that's a powder or liquid, but when I was doing my stims this week they instructed me to use 5 ccs of the sodium chloride and use it to mix my bravelle and menupur, then add 5 units of Lupron to the mix. They did have me mix everything into the same shot - my nurse said with the "cocktail" I would only have to stick myself once! I was nervous about losing medication during the mixing, but it was only a few drops and the doctor said that amount was too small to matter. You should call your nurse if you're nervous, though - then you'll know for sure you're on the right track!

I could be wrong but you could inject 1cc of dilutent into 150 IUs of Menopur (that's the powder one, right?) and you would have 1cc to inject. I think you should be counting how much dilutant (liquid) you are using + liquid meds, but not counting the powdered units because they disappear into the liquid. And even the units of liquid meds may not = the cc's. I don't think 150 units of Gonal-F equals 150 cc's because cc's are volume. You could have 150 units of Gonal-F in .5 cc's or 1cc.
