IVF or Clomid/IUI

Hello,

I had a D&C 2 weeks ago....12 weeks pg. After our prenatal testing, 3 specialist advised us that our child was very sick and would not survive..severe chromosonal abnormalities. We are heartbroken. Today, I had my post-op appointment. The doctor recommended us doing the same protocol...Clomid/IUI...this worked for us on the 2nd attempt. I am okay with doing this but I am afraid of this happening again. The pathology test indicate that this was a chromosome issue that happend at conception..."a fluke" is what my RE called it...and that the chances of this happening again are slim. Of course, they told me this the first time that my chances were slim...and of course the worst happend. My RE recommends us doing the Clomid/IUI again, but he also mentioned that with IVF, they can use PGD to test the embryos for any chromosonal abnormalities, before they are implanted inside the woman. I am 37 and worried about this happening again. My RE tells me that these chromosonal abnormalities can happen to a women at any age...even early 20s. I am not sure what to do. My insurance covers part of IVF...but we wanted to hold on to this money as a "last resort." I am not sure which direction we should go...I am so worried about getting bad news after prenatal testing again. It seems like with IVF, the PGD testing takes care of all of these concerns....really need some help. I would really appreciate any advice you could share. Thank you.

sri - it is a tough decision, especially since insurance normally doesn't cover the PGD part at all, even if they do cover the other stuff. i completely understand where you are coming from though.

given the history of my recurrent miscarriages, my RE recommended IVF/ICSI/PGD. we skipped right past IUI's and regular IVF and we decided to go ahead with PGD since it seemed like the only way we were going to get answers and were not still leaving it up to chance. every situation is different, but for us we have tried, gotten pregnant and lost 5 babies...we are done trying that way. to us PGD is our last effort at having babies of our own. but at least we can say we have tried everything and we don't have to play the what if game later down the road.

good luck making your decision. i will also say that GSN is where we are having the PGD done, and they have discounted their rates through the rest of 2009 (not to put too much of a time crunch on you).
