IVF holiday hiatus

I wanted to start a thread for those of us who aren't currently currently cycling. Whatever your reason and you need an ivf hiatus please respond. I'm hoping others are looking for a "rest thread". Any takers?

Thanks so much, kindhiker! I'm sure there's more of us out there!

I'm starting to think about what I can make for our Thanksgiving get-together. Thinking maybe pecan pie? Really need to re-establish contact with my family. I feel like I kind of isolated myself with these 2 IVF cycles (trying to avoid probing questions.)

Actually, my family for the most part "gets" the part about the probing questions. Our motto growing up was always "no news is good news" since my parents were sometimes gone on trips to Africa and it was more difficult to communicate back then (we old-timers know about the days before internet and email). Except in this case with the IVF, no news is kind of bad news I guess. But anyway, they're used to not knowing every detail.

What are y'all planning for T-giving? How is communication in your family?

Me! We just had a failed cycle in September (chemical pg) and we won't be able to cycle again until probably March, but we really have no clue. The clinic we have been using can't get us in until August, so we are looking into other possibilities.

BB-I too isolated during my ivf cycles. I'd like to reconnect some. Mmmm...pecan pie. J usually make an apple and a pumpkin to both sides of the family. It's my little tradition. What sort of pie crust do you use?

Tsproing-welcome! I'm sorry for your chemical...it's horrible and I understand. I am shocked you have to wait so long! Are you thinking of switching re because they won't get you in till August? I have never heard of a wait like that...must be frustrating. But in the meantime you (we all prolly) can heal and regroup before riding the ivf train again.

Hope-Im glad you found this place. I haven't done iui but I sure hope ivf does the trick for ya! I know every doc does things differently but if you have any questions we're here for you!

Afm-I'm getting ready to eat a yummy casserole for dinner. I love fall and the cuddly-ness makes me feel just a tiny bit better. I had two people at work ask me how I am today (I told them I was doing ivf a couple of months ago. I hated telling them what happened...but I'm proud of staying composed and not crying.

Yes, we are looking into other clinics because our clinic has such a wait. It is because my DH needs surgical sperm retrieval and they can only do so many per cycle. So it looks like the earliest we can get in will be March, in a clinic that we will have to travel to vs. the one we've been using in town.

Hi hope2bpregnant and tsproing! Nice to meet you. Sorry tsproing about your chemical and the delay. How are you doing?

Kindhiker- we're both pie girls, eh? I make my own crust (to avoid trans fats) but I don't do the double crust or the weaving the strips on top or anything. What kind of crust do you do? One time I experimented trying to use whole wheat flour to make it healthier and it was just gross! So tough we could hardly chew it!

LOL BB! My mother-in-law tried the whole wheat crust thing...she tells the story as if the crust was a weapon...cutting people and making them bleed it was so hard. I make my own crust with olive oil...it's a little more difficult to work with and definitely a problem if you want your top crust to look perfect, but it tastes good, especially for quiches. If I really wanna make sure there's no olive oil taste (for fruit pies), I use canola oil. Is that what you use? (I may or may not be taking a holiday hiatus, but couldn't resist jumping in on the pie/crust discussion.)

(Oh yeah, I think she finally came up with a recipe for a whole wheat pie crust that wasn't awful. In fact, I think I've had it and it wasn't bad at all. If you wanna try it, I'll get it from her.)

Tsproing-that makes sense. And ya found the right place to ride out the wait. Glad to have you here.

BB and KB- yes we're both pie people! I am big into natural, organic, healthy, but yummy. I use spectrum all natural organic shortening or earth balance. Both are organic palm oil and they work so great. Otherwise I follow Betty Crocker pie crust recipe. So my pies are just like regular but no trans fats, hydrogenated oils, or cholesterol (I think pumpkin has some cholesterol cuz of the condensed milk though). Haha I tried whole wheat crust too. I used whole wheat pastry flour but it wasn't good...crust was hard and it didn't look yummy. One TG I forgot to add sugar to the apple pie for my moms house if was funny and the family was gracious. One thing I have to master us rolling out the dough. I think I need an untreated huge cutting board cuz I've tried my wooden (sealed) table and countertops but they stick even using flour. I got a silicone mat but that's even worse. Any ideas? (I love that I'm asking for pie advice on FT!)

love talkin' pies... or anything else...

um... is it sticking because of the dough itself? Maybe the dough needs just a touch more flour??? Don't know. Maybe the palm oil is just more sticky. I haven't had that problem but I either roll it out on our thick plastic covered table or on our formica countertops.

KB- sure! send me the recipe if you have time- always ready to try something new!
