3 day, 5 day 6 day transfers

OK, when I was in the room waiting for my ER the nurse said to me, we will call you on day 3 to tell you if you are transferring that day or if you can be pushed to blast/day 5&6. She said that being pushed is good. So does that
mean going on day 3 is bad and that the embryos are not doing well?

I know that blast is best but is day 3 bad? I have seen many of you transfer at day 3. Did that mean anything? I am just nervous. I havenot heard anything yet.

I was a 3 dayer. I only had two egglets dividing. They weren't going to risk letting them go another 2 days because we might lose them. If I would have had a large number fertilize, they would have let them go another 2 days so they can pick the strongest.

Howdy Jenn! I got pushed to 5-day at RMA... As for 3-day, they seem to do it (at RMA) if you have a small amount of embies, or if the quality has them concerned that they could arrest before 5 days. In my case, I had 12 fertilized, and 10 made it to 5-day transfer day. 8 remained, and 5 were frozen. So, I had good numbers, hence why they pushed to 5-day. I would have KILLED them if they pushed me to 6-day though, since it's "easier for them to schedule, so we're not sure which day you'd be." What a fudging PITA when it came to DH's work. Thank GAWD they did not do a 6-day! He'd have been TICKED!

So, while 5-day is better, 3-day is still fine - there are a TON of chicks on here who do 3-day, and some of their RE's ONLY do 3-day! So, it must be fine if REs only do it that way.

Thanks. While I am sitting here knowing I won't hear anything today (I called Dr. Scott and asked if he could call me and let me know how my embies are doing) I am freaking out. I wish I were one of those people who are relaxed and not constantly thinking things are going wrong.

I just wish RMA would not think of 3 day as bad. I wish they would keep that to themselves.

They never did say 3-day was bad... After some research, I came to the realization that 5-day is better IN SOME CASES. So, DON'T WORRY!!!! Your little embies are doing fine, getting all ready to come home to momma!!!! And RMA will call you if something goes wrong, so if the phone doesn't ring - be HAPPY! Find something to do to keep your mind off of it... I worked the day after my retrieval, and went to school two days after retrieval, so when I got the phone call Tuesday morning, I had been pretty preoccupied beforehand. Tuesday morning I was excited waiting, but they called at 7:30am to let me know that we were pushed to blast. Which was cool, since they called so early, cause hubby was able to go to work. I actually appreciated them calling so early! (If they called between 9-11 when they call for ETs, I would have been pissed! I was tired of having DH home at that point!!! *laughs*)

My clinic is of the belief that there is no better place than the womb for the embryos to grow and I believe the vast majority of transfers are 3 day transfers. Hopefully that helps.

~child ment~

My clinic does not have a preference for 5dt over 3dt. They prefer to put the embies back inside us as soon as possible. Also, they said the % success rates between them is very small....why risk losing great embies in the hope that they become blasts? Getting an embie to blast takes a complex process to succeed. In a petri dish, they may struggle. However, if your clinic is confident with doing blast transfers and you have many to choose from, then go for it.

I had a success from a 3dt and wouldnt hesitate to do a 3dt again.

Good luck!

Hi,

I just had my day 5 transfer and I had also been wondering about day 3 v. day 5. So many women seem to have day 3, so I was worried. My clinic told me that for a woman who has a lot of eggs retrieved, many of them can look great at day 3- but many drop out by day 5 (as many as 50%), so her chances of BFP are greater with day 5 because you know the eggs at least made it the blast stage. I did some more internet research and found some more info that repeated this. Also, it said if a clinic is experienced with doing day 5, the embryos are just as secure in the incubator as in the woman- no advantage to getting the day 3s in as soon as possible.

That doesn't mean 3 day is bad in any way- it works for a ton of women. They are just different. Whatever works!!!!!!

I only had 6 eggs retrieved and 2 eggs develop but I think my RE wanted to do Day 5 to see how my eggs responded- poor egg quality issues.

Jennifer,

YOu are aware of my story at RMA. My embryos liked my body better. At RMA I was pushed to 5 day for both IVF's. When I switched clincs to St. B they advised to have a 3 day. As expected the 3 day worked and I am preggo with triplets. Do what you feel is right. I insisted with RMA that if I did IVF cycle #3 with them that I would want a 3 day. RMA seems to push most of their patients to 5 day but will do what you request.
