Questions about making first appointment at fertility clinic

My husband and I want to make an appointment at a local fertility clinic that offers PGD due to genetic issues concerning my husband. Our insurance doesn't cover it. Can I just call up and make an appointment? What happens at the first appointment? Do you just meet with one of the doctors who just fills you in on what they do there and asks you a bunch of questions? What should I say when I call? We are totally clueless with how to go about this whole thing. Please help and give us some advice!

I would call up and set up an appt. directly with the clinic. Also find out from your ins. co it you need a referral for the consult from your primary care physician. Your ins. co. might cover the consult and meds you never know. Good luck!

I would see if you can get a recommendation of an RE in your area from friends, relatives or ask for one here, so that you make sure that you're going to see someone with good stats!! Are your issues only related to genetic issues, ie, neither of you has any IF issues? When you meet with the RE, they'll discuss what options they think might be best for you. They may require you to have some tests done to make sure that everything else is absolutely ok before you undergo tx. Routine blood tests such as HIV, Hep. B & C, Rubella, Chlamydia, & your blood type (regardless of whether you know it or not). Some RE's may require other blood tests in addition to these, but these are the basics.

Good luck!! I hope you'll stick around with us & let us help you through this time in your lives!! It's exciting yet terrifying all at the same time!!

Karen

If you've had any IF related testing done, bring the results with you to the appointment, or at least bring a list of what you've had done so you can avoid duplicating tests. The doctor will probably order a bunch of tests for you. My doctor does a complete exam at the first appointment (pelvic, breast, and pap smear if you haven't had one done recently). Mostly he will just talk to you about your history and treatment options. Remember that every patient has been a first timer before, and the office staff should be prepared to handle that. Just call and tell them why you're calling, just like you told us, and they'll tell you what to do. Good luck!

Please check out the CDC stats as well. Look up the clinic on the internet. Be sure they are reputable. AND, PGD is still relatively new, and it's a tricky science. Just because a clinic "does" PGD does not mean they are highly skilled at it...
