Tests before IVF??

I just checked the website for SIRM and there are a set of tests I have to do. My insurance will cover them, but when I went in, they want additional tests to do, not covered.

Two questions: 1. Are these required. 2. Do they really show anything helpful.

An example is they test for HIV (no problem), but they also want to test for HIV antibodies. Hep C (covered, no problem), but also the Hep C antibodies.

I don't get why they need both, if I am HIV negative, what does th antibody HIV test show?? It just seems like extra $$$$, rather than test that are helpful (and my RE for my IUIs agrees). Just thought you ladies might know????

Gosh, I just got my b/w done this month for my first IVF. I can't remember if they did the antibody tests along with the std. It seems awful redundant.

Did they give you a reason why they require both? With all the other expenses involved in IVF I certainly wouldn't want to spend money on tests that are unnecessary.

I'm not sure, but I would really push the issue with SIRM. Perhaps I'm missing something here, but it seems pointless to do the antibody tests too?? Unless it shows exposure?? But even then, if the actual test is negative, what's the difference???

I'd call them & ask for the reasons they want both.

Hi Ladies~

The reason they would require this (the anitbody test) is because you can be exposed for sometime (up to 6 months) before your test would be positive. It's just a way to make sure that you are not positive and that you haven't been exposed. So, technically your testing could show up as negative but you could really eventually be positive (if you were exposed). I feel like I'm talking in circles but does that make sense?

Melissa - That totally makes sense. But each test is $$$, and I have been tested 18 months ago and being tested again (all tests have to be within 18 months). I will call and find out what is required.

Thanks!!

kris~

Believe me I understand about the $$. We're a self pay so I understand what you're saying. It's probably just part of their protocol. Sometimes offices are good about accomodating you, but sometimes they just won't break protocol. I hope your dr's office does.

It's possible that if you're general practitioner doctor orders the tests, your insurance might cover them. That might be a route to check out.

Good luck!
