Tubes removal +bowel complications...

Hi everybody...

I have hydrosalpinx on both tubes. I have to remove them prior IVF, but the doctor told me that I have severe adhesions on pelvic area which give me a risk of "bowel" injury when detaching/removing tubes...

I am very afraid!!! Does anyone had anything like me? What was the outcome? Is my doctor not good?

I had the same problem, as I'd already had bowel surgery prior to my tubal removal (due to Crohn's disease). My RE who routinely does laps to remove tubes decided that I would be better off referred to a surgeon who specialized in gyn and bowel surgery. So, if there were to be a bowel problem, he could take care of it with expertise.

In the end, the lap went fine, and my bowel was unharmed. Usually they cauterize the tubes instead of removing if they are afraid of other complications.

Best of luck to you!

I just had my tubes cauterized in Feb. RE was very worried about the same thing because I've had numerous abdominal surgeries and she was very worried about adhesions and running into bowel. She was so worried that she was almost willing to try my first IVF without cauterizing my tubes. We went ahead and did the surgery anyway with an "open lap" which cuts down on the risk of injuring the bowel but it's a slightly bigger cut when going through the belly button. My belly button has since healed and it looks great - just like before.

She also type and crossed my blood and had units of blood waiting for me, just in case I needed a blood transfusion. That was scarey, but it made me feel safe - in case something was to happen, which it never did. The surgery was very uneventful. She found A LOT of adhesions, removed some, stayed away from my bowel. Cauterized the tubes. Removed some cysts!!! I'm very glad I had the surgery because it will help with my first IVF.

I had to stay an extra day in the hospital though.... Not due to the adhesions but due to fluid retention because I have interstial cystitis and my bladder did not want to cooperate one bit. In all, if your RE is aware that you have this problem, he/she may take extra precautions to make sure you have a safe and good outcome.

Good luck.

Petra

I had a laparatomy performed by a gynecological oncologist that involved removing 4lbs of adhesions from the bowel, colon, bladder and the rest of the pelvic region. I requested that my tubes (which he worked on un-blocking during surgery) be left in in hopes that I could conceive on my own.

I was very worried about having surgery on my bowel as well, but my surgeon was excellent and everything worked out just fine. I spent two days in the hospital and my scar is just like a c-section scar so you can't even see it.

I have hydros, too, and the left one is adhered to my ovary, so they cauterized them both instead of removing them. They were afraid they would disrupt bloodflow to the uterus.

I feel so much better knowing that you are all doing fine.

I am still afraid. I had Cancer when I was 13. Lets say I have hospital trauma!! I am cured for 15 years now.

I didnt think I was ever going to need any more surgeries in my life..

But I have to accept...

As others have mentioned, I would ask about having the tubes cauterized. This would accomplish the same thing in terms of helping to have success with IVF: the toxic fluid from the tubes would not be able to back up into the uterus.

Good luck from another tubie sister!
