Question IVF Success Stories with ICSI and Assisted Hatching?

    Hi Ladies,
I'm a newbie to this forum and I was hoping to find some support as we are gearing up to do our first IVF sometime soon!

I just turned 39 and DH is 34. We are basically just dealing with Secondary Unexplained and I also have a lack of CM due to a LEEP that I had done about 8 years ago.

We've done 3 IUI's (one natural and 2 with Clomid) and they all failed. So, because of my age, my RE is suggesting IVF.

All of my tests came out very well. My AMH is 1.4 (avg. for my age is 1.6) and my FSH is 6.4 so that is encouraging. Also, my DH's swimmers are normal.

However, we really can only afford to do IVF twice so I was thinking of spending the extra $2,000 for ICSI and Assisted Hatching.

Are there any ladies out there who will share their success stories with me so that I can make a decision?

Welcome to the board! I'm sorry your find yourself here, but you will find a lot of support here.

Yes, I would definitely suggest doing ICSI. When you are spending this amount of money, ICSI is the extra insurance, so to speak, to make sure your eggs get fertilized. Even with the best sperm, sometimes strange things happen and they just don't fert like you would expect without ICSI. It is worth the extra money to make sure you get as many embryos as possible.

I'm not as familiar with Assisted Hatching (AH). One thing to keep in mind is that AH does increase your risk for identical twins. If you are okay with that, I would go ahead with AH too for the same reasons as the ICSI. Might as well do everything you can to increase your odds if the cost isn't that much greater and this is your only shot.

Good luck!! I hope this one cycle is the miracle you are looking for. If you would like to, please join one of our cycle groups to be supported by other women going through the same thing you are.

I have done ICSI every time, but not assisted hatching. I thought that ICSI was mostly just used for people with sperm problems? That is why we did it...I would ask RE how much it really helps

BC - Thank you for the warm welcome. I appreciate your feedback! I will definitely be requesting both then. We can only afford 2 tries so they both have to count!!

tenseintexas - Thanks for your reply and the good luck!! We'll need it! I have been reading that ICSI is recommended for women over 37 (or 35?) I just turned 39 so I'd like to try EVERYTHING that will help us to be successful. It can't hurt and I'm totally fine with twins so I guess we'll see how it goes.

Adrianne - I had both. ICSI can help with MF as well as women over 35. As you age, the zona pellucida (outer shell) on the egg can get thicker and harder for the sperm to penetrate, so ICSI is a good thing for that. AH is also good for over 35 because of the same reason.

    Success Ment.
I was successful in my first IVF attempt with both male and female factor infertility at the age of 37. We did both ICSI and AH. We had a 100% fertilization rate.
    End Ment.

I would definitely recommend both for you. Good luck!

tenseintexas - Congratulations on your success!! That's fantastic and it gives me great hope! The terrible two's are certainly a BUSY time!

I'm sorry to hear about the translocation and poor swimmers though....but thank goodness for IVF to save the day. We truly are blessed to have such wonderful science at our disposal.

Adrianne, I am having my first IVM next month and am also doing ICSI and AH. From what I understand, ICSI is especially helpful for older women, for male factor and when the zona pellucida is too thick. For us its the zona, because of the IVM the shell gets too hard sometimes so to ensure its not a problem my doctor always does ICSI and AH with IVM, even when age and sperm isnt an issue. I do hope it will help make an extra difference, even if its just that one little extra something!!

    Wishing you all the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PaleSpring - Thank you for sharing with me! I had never heard of IVM before so I had to run and Google it. It sounds wonderful!! I wish you the very best of luck for your procedure and I pray that it's just what you need to get your lil miracle!!

I'll be sure to keep everyone posted when we FINALLY get the money saved up for our IVF. Until then, I'm just doing things the old fashioned way coupled with exercise/yoga, supplements and lots of nookie!

    Good luck to you!!!
