Why can't they use multiple samples?

My wife stumped me with a question last night so I told her I would turn to the experts.....anyone know the answer to this?

For couples with male factor (low count, motility, etc.) why can't they freeze a few samples in advance from the husband then combine them to inject at once for the IUI or do multiple inseminations all around the expected ovulation time?

Isn't the freezing technology fairly uncomplicated? They do it for donor sperm, guys undergoing chemotherapy, etc. I'm sure it has added costs but probably not as much as IVF.

Anyone know? thanks.

DH- I don't know that they can't. As you know, my dh had a VR last year. One thing I have heard as a suggestions from dr's is to have him give a sample periodicaly, and if the numbers are good, to freeze them to do IUI at a later date if it became necessary (due to scarring, etc). I am expecting an email from my dh's urologist today, I will ask him about this.

Wow! Good question. I have never thought about that. Should be interesting to see the answer!

pg ment in sig.

To the best of my knowledge, there are clinics here in Oregon that do. Dh and I considered it, but given his super low count, it might have meant him going in upwards of 60X (if you calculate the 3 days of abstinence before each one, you can see what a "sex-life" impact that could have). Donor sperm was lookin' PRETTY GOOD after that conversation Still, I'm pretty sure they can....

Good luck, hon:
Jessica

I would say costs, but it is a good question (and why they don't offer it if it is cost). On a side note, my DH has the ability to "fill the cup" twice, in a short amount of time. I asked the clinic if we should do that and they said YES. He has only been able to do it once (time constraints), but his numbers went up dramatically.

Hello, just a reply to your post, my husband and I did IUI today, and we actually got to use 2 frozen samples, plus a "fresh" sample. It really helped, my dh has very low count and motility, today however, it was really good... I would ask your RE, you should be able to use more than one sample. Good luck

thanks for the replies

Thanks all for the replies. I'm going to ask our RE before our next IUI if and when my wife's cysts disappear. I'll let everyone know what I learn.

We thought the 2 week wait was bad but being being benched for a month (at least) is worse - there's nothing to hope for except that time passes quickly.

Jessica - you are truly a great person to check back in here. I hope the worst of the morning sickness has passed.

Lawrence - I agree, the ebch is the worst, but the good thing is, (I just got off the bench), is that it has been a really positive cycle. New perspective, and I am just glad I am in the game, so I am not having bad feelings or being pessimistic yet.... hope it continues

Great question....don't know exactly. I've actually heard of several IVF people using a mix of a frozen sample and fresh.
