    Progesterone and Cerclage Question

I had an emergency cerclage placed at 24 weeks and my doc put me on progesterone (vaginal inserts) for only 2 weeks. I noticed that most of you remained on progesterone a lot longer after having your cerclages placed and I was wondering if I should be concerned.

My next appt. is on oct 12th and I was going to ask the question then but I am just curious if any of you had any thoughts.

    Thanks

I get the progesterone shot and I am currently waiting on my nurse to get here and give it to me ( she comes once a week on Fridays ). I started getting them while in the hospital at 21 weeks and I don't know when I will stop getting them. I know I have 4 more vials so at least until 30 weeks probably. I had my cerclage done at 21 week and then remained in the hospital on bedrest for three weeks. I haven't talked to my Ob much about the shots but I do remember her saying that it was to help my cervix. My as well ask you Dr. about it, doesn't hurt to ask. Btw i noticed our due dates are very close!

I had my cerclage placed at 15wk. I started progesterone shots at 22wk and stopped them at 32wk.

Im just surprised that they stopped. Usually this med is to keep the uterus calm from Pre-term labor. Why did they stop them?

Hi. No cerclage here but I take vaginal progesterone nightly. I haven't talked to my OB about when to stop. I'm 30 weeks, 2 days today.

    So, not sure.

Hmmmm, now I'm really concerned. I'm not sure why she stopped them and I didn't really think to ask until I started to read these boards and stories of others in situations similar to mine.

I'm currently on bed rest and have never had any contractions or signs of preterm labor, so maybe she felt they weren't neccesary. I'll definately be asking at my next appointment because I'm kind of thinking they may have played a part in me not having any contractions.

    Thanks for the replies ladies!

I would definitely ask. My guess is I'll go off at 34 weeks.

I went on progesterone suppositories with the twins when I started funneling at 20 weeks and stayed on until 32 weeks. I honestly believe that the progesterone is what kept my cervix from funneling further (even though I was on modified bed rest). It wasn't until I stopped the progesterone that I effaced further than my cerclage and needed it removed. Definitely keep on it!!

Turns out that they took me off of the progesterone due to a huge fibroid I have. They didn't want to help or encourage its growth. It has been growing right along with this pregnancy, but luckily it hasn't caused any problems.

I go in for another ultrasound on Friday and I'm hoping it hasn't grown anymore. I've been having contractions this past week and the docs are a little concerened that they may be caused by the fibroid. Luckily I'm only having about 1-2 an hour and they said not to worry unless I have more than 4 an hour or they become painful.

Luvs- I hope those contractions stay away. There is a med you can take at home to help keep them at bay Procardia. Its for lowering blood pressure, but it slows/stops contractions. Good Luck at your appt! I hope it has not grown.

luvs2laff - I started having B-H contractions this past week myself, so it's totally normal for where we are in our pregnancies. I really hope your fibroid doesn't cause any issues!!!!
