Cervix funneled - but 3 cm??? Terrified. Looking for help.

Hi everyone. I was sure hoping that someone would have some information to share.

I had my 19 week ultrasound this past Wednesday, and some funneling was detected. It's Y in shape, and takes up approximately 15-20% (my guess) from where the internal os should be, and where the cervix now starts. It kinda reminds me of what a river and river mouth looks like. The cervix is currently 3 cm long, and other than the funneled internal os, the rest is closed.

The doctor (THE most famous, best reknowned Dr. in the area - actually works at the hospital, a specialist not part of my normal practice - I was sent to him for the anatomy scan purely because of AMA) just said he wanted to see me back there for another ultrasound in a week. I go on Tuesday to look for changes. I will be just over 20 weeks at that point.

PLEASE be straight with me. Am I at risk for preterm labor? What are the odds that I will go into preterm labor? Am I at risk for PROM?

The doctor said nothing about bedrest or even taking it easy in the meantime. Does that mean he is not terribly concerned? He was slightly puzzled, saying he normally wouldn't see a funnel like that in a normal length cervix. But the more I read, 4 cm would be more "normal" than 3 cm.

I'm so scared that all of a sudden it will open completely or I will feel a gush of fluid......................

E.T.A. Another thing that puzzled him is that I've never had any cervical biopsy or cervical trauma or anything like that. The only thing is that I have delivered one child before.

    Hi somedayMommy,
I know your scared, but you are in a great place with your cervical length. My cervix started to shorten at 14 weeks. It was 2.5cm which they said was low normal and not to worry. The next week it was 2.0cm, and I was put on bed rest. The next week .6cm now everybody's freaking out, my funneling was u shaped andI was horrified. Off to the hospital were I meet the best peri ever. He was upset and surprised that my ob didn't send me for a cerclage when I was 2.0cm with funneling. To make a long story short, had cerclage placed the next day and he was able to extend my cervix to 2.0cm, and I have no funneling going on at all. He checks me weekly with transvaginal u/s to measure my cervix. It's holding at 2.0cm no funneling and I am 19 weeks today with twins. You need to be agressive the funeling can come and go, but you really need to make sure they are measuring your cervix weekly. Please don't except anything less, because things change so quickly, especially since he's not sure why this is happening. The sooner the cerclage is placed the more sucessful it is. If you have cervical changes demand a cerclage. The latest a cerclage can be placed is 23-24 weeks, but you dont want to wait that long, because chances of success decrease with time. I don't want to scare you but I also dont want you to wait to long. I had two prior pregancies with no cervical problems so this was a total surprise. They think it happened from the extra weight of the twins. I'm also on bedrest which really bites, but what every it takes. You can put your self on bedrest or just take it easy, no heavy lifting or running up and down stairs. I know you and those babies will be just fine.

honeybun, thank you soooooo much for your experience and advice. Yes, if the cervix has changed, I am going to demand a cerclage and to be excused from work and put on bedrest.

Congratulations on your twins and for making it this far! Looks like the bedrest and the cerclage are working!
