starting Lovenox
Does anyone know why doctors recommend starting Lovenox or Heparin with a + pregnancy test, instead of immediately after (ET) retrieval?
It just seems that it would make more sense to start right after retrieval instead of waiting to see if you get a + HPT to start.

I have always started heparin (which is basically the same as lovenox) the day of the embryo transfer. The reason I switched to a heparin protocol was due to a chemical pregnancy and having borderline numbers for the APA's. I have always thought that it needs to be started earlier than a + preg test. I would talk to your doctor. Good luck.

My RI is Dr. Coulam, and she said Lovenox is started with a + pregnancy test. I plan to ask her why, I forgot to the last time I was at her office.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows why some doctors recommend this. I am also + for APA's, which is why I question this. Sun8--Why do you use Heparin instead of Lovenox??? |

I used heparin instead of lovenox because it was not covered by my insurance until I had a positive pregnancy test. Heparin was only around $85 for a month supply and lovenox was $600 for a 2 week supply and then once I did have a positive preg test my copay was around $50. Since I only do heparin until 12 weeks, I just stayed on the heparin and did not want to hassle with changing the prescription.

For my first two frozen embryo cycles I started heparin the day after the transfer and both ended in a negative (perfect cycle). My last cycle I started heparin when I started estrogen and it too ended in a negative (perfect cycle). Now it seems that since I started heparin I can't even get pregnant. She has since read studies that state heparin can impact the way the placenta cells try to attach to the uterine wall. We now think it might be better to try and wait for the first + pregnancy sign. I've been told by a couple of doctors that figuring out when to start heparin is very tricky since some woman get pregnant when they start it right away and others need to wait. |
