MTHFR/high folate+increased risk of autism? p/g mentioned

hi, all,

i'm currently 16 weeks p/g with twins at age 41 after 2 years ttc/losses/hydrosalpingx/etc. i'm an immune issues success story, grateful for all the help i've received here in the past, and wondering if anyone can help me now with a concern.

after being diagnosed MTHFR w/ one mutation for C and one mutation for A, along with prothrombin gene mutation, i got pregnant after a second IVF. with the monitoring of a peri, i'm now on 80mg of lovenox 2x a day, metanx (prescription strength folate/b vits), and prenatals. i've been researching the necessity of an amnio, what i can learn, risks, etc, and through this have stumbled upon some info about a connection between autism and MTHFR, as well as a higher risk of autism associated with taking high dosages of folate.

does anyone know anything about this, and if so, could you point me in the direction of some good resources to consult? we are worried, to say the least.

thanks,
jen

I am not 100 percent sure on this - but if I'm not mistaken - the higher risk of autism is linked to NOT taking the increased folic acid if one has MTHFR - meaning - taking something like the Metanx or Foltex or Folgard will DECREASE your risk - not increase it.

I know that women with MTHFR are also thought to be at higher risk for having babies with neural tube defects due to inability to metabolize folic acid properly - so again - the greatly increased dose of folate decreases those risks.

Jen,
Mizzschiz sounds right --of course if you or I do a thread search on this board we are likely to come up with quite a lot of info as a former resident expert on MTHFR used to write and research on it quite a bit.

I think the risk of autism would be without taking any dosages of folate??...
if I can find more stuff on this I will put in this thread.
