AIRPORTS, security, and heparin needles ??

I'm sorry if this question has already been asked, but I am in the dark about airtravel and my 'drugs'.

1) Am I allowed to pack needles/syringes in checked or carry-on luggage ?

2) Do I bring a SHARPS biohazard container with me or just a glass bottle with screw top for disposal, then wait til I get home for proper disposal ?

3) Is this legal ?

I have a business trip planned for mid May and thought I'd get this figured out early if I can. I've seen the red container's in the Airport bathroom- but was just wondering about the above questions.

Thanks so much for any input you may have,
Valerie in Texas

Hi Valerie,

I spoke to DB's staff about this issue, and they said that in spite of dr's notes, people do have trouble with security from time to time. They suggested taking one dose of the heparin product the day before and one on the day of a very long flight and packing three syringes in the checked luggage, along with a copy of the doctor's note. Then, you can take one the day after the flight. On the way home, you can take one injection the day before the flight, one on the day of your flight, and one when you get home. That way, you can take 6 recommended shots without having to deal with security and your carry-on luggage. This is my own protocol; I'm not sure about yours, and I'm not saying it's the right one for anyone else.

Hope that's helpful,
Lauren

Hi,

In the past, I have always hand-carried all of my meds, syringes, etc. with a note from my RE just in case anything ever happened to my luggage. I've never had any problems with security check-ins, and have even had the flight attendants refrigerate some of my meds, if needed, for longer flights where I have had to administer my shots in-flight.

If your SHARPS container is small enough, bring it on board, but if not, a glass or plastic container (like one of those for toiletries) would work and then you could dispose your needles in the SHARPS box at airport bathroom.

Good luck!
