Positive APA Blood Result???

I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with APA (antiphospholipid antibodies). I just got the news that I tested positive to this. Not good!!! I'm in the process of my 4th DE IVF.

I'm told that I was very lucky to have given birth to my DS. APA is a clotting blood factor which is common for causing miscarriages. To help in the prevention of this a baby asprin and injections of heparin, which are blood thinners are given daily.

I'm a little freaked right now. My RE said it has been stated that a lot women who need egg donors are prone to having this APA. He also stated that a lot of people don't test for this. I did 3 prior IVF's with another clinic and I was never tested.

Just was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this topic?

Hi,
Testing + for APA means you have a clotting disorder which can prevent implantation, so you never even know if you got pg or wreak havoc on a pg at any time if not treated, by causing clotting to occur in the placenta, preventing nourishment from getting to the baby.
THe good news is, tx is pretty simple, ba and a blood thinner like heparin or Lovenox.
What you might want to also test for is the presence of high NK activity as well since a high % of women who have +APA also have killer cells.
I took Lovenox and ba through my successful pg w/DD and am doing so again. It really is not a big deal and obviously is very well worth the injections in the end!

Hope this helps! Best of luck.

Sandi - here is a useful link for you. I have come across many women who have had successful pregnancies with this when treated with heparin and aspirin.

Good luck
