MTHFR question

I am heterozygous for MTHFR. My fasting plasma level for homocysteine was 3.1 which is excellent. Normal starts at 3.4. My question is: How do you/doctors determine if you need lovenox/heparin during your cycle as opposed to after getting pregnant? If homocysteine is at an excellent level, why or what would elevate it?? For those who do not know my story, I lost my dd at 17 weeks gestation in November most likely due to this MTHFR. Now, I'm ttc again but want everything laid out first so as to not go through that trauma ever again. Thanks.

Wendy

Hi Wendy,

I think the pre ttc or post conception debate is purely subjective. THere are docs out there who believe the blood clotting factor can inhibit implantation, so you never know whether you've conceived. Others just go with starting the blood thinners once a pg is acheived.
Personally I think it's better to start pre ttc. The more aggressive docs do this, and I've had very good results doing it this way too. Plus I'd hate for you to either not conceive right away because of clotting or to have a pg compromised because of it. Give yourself the best possible chance for success.
As for your homocysteine question, sorry I don't know what could cause this to become elevated during pregnancy.

Best of luck!

Lynn
